El Camino 39 - Clear Lake 38

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Dec 8, 2008 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

In a low scoring game on Monday, Dec 29, against El Camino, Clear Lake held a slight lead until the last 30 seconds of the first half when El Camino pulled ahead 19-18. In the first half Mark McCollum dominated by getting 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal but he could not score (0 for 3).

Despite a second half in which Mark again delivered a stellar performance, he could not score and went 2 of 12 for the outing. In the final period after a tie at 28 from a trey by Jacob Horton, Lake went on to increase their lead to 9, 37-28, before EC came back to within 1. With 1:04 remaining in the game El Camino hit a trey to go ahead 39-37. With 7 seconds remaining and El Camino still up by 2, Mark gets fouled on a defensive rebound, hits the first but cannot close with the second free throw. Lake loses another squeeker by 1.

Lake faces off against Kennedy at noon Tuesday.

In other action Valencia defeated Saugus to advance to the Championship game against Granada Hills Charter tomorrow night at 6 p.m. Chaminade will face Eastside in the Consolation Championship at 3 p.m.

Action photos for this game can be found at Current season albums  by Friday  at 2 p.m. unless I can get a good internet connection  to upload them sooner.

Clear Lake 73 - The Village 50

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Dec 8, 2008 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Clear Lake last played in this tournament in 1996. That year we placed second behind Clear Creek.

Today's win was victory number 1000 for Clear Lake High School Varsity Basketball. Can you hear the fireworks and celebration going off in my head? Today was also Dr. Joe McCollum's birthday.

In first round action today Clear Lake faced The Village,  an "independent" school with their first year of freshmen at the private school. Their ten man roster showed 8 freshmen and 2 eighth graders although only six players were present for today's game against Clear Lake. This very talent laden team listed two players at 6'8" and three at 6'5" on their roster.

Former Olympian triple jumper Frank Rutherford and his "Elite Bahamian Education Program" is oiling the pipeline from the Bahamas where some of this talent is piped in from. A UH alum, Rutherford was the first Bahamian track and field Olympic medalist.

The Village team is coached by former Duke player Gerald Henderson. His father played in the NBA for 13 years.

Now I do not know what it means to be a freshman in the Bahamas buts sans birth certificates, we are supposed to believe these kids are freshman which almost defies credibilty. They do not look like ninth graders and they do not play like ninth graders (File this one up there with the 14 year old Chinese gymnasts). This team of youngsters is very talented. We will here much more from this bunch before too long.

Lake played well the entire game despite poor shooting from the field. Lake shot a weak 4 of 21 from the field  in the first quarter and it was tied at 12. Slightly better shooting in the second quarter with 9 of 29 but Lake scored 28 points to be up 40-24 at halftime.

Action photos for this game can be found at Current season albums  by TBD date and time.

Clear Lake won the Silver Division Championship with this win.

Impressive victory considering Kyle Ashton was injured and did not play. Very close game (tied 8 times with several lead changes). Every player noticeably stepped up especially Jackson Hardage.  Outstanding play also from Nick Arrington, Matt McCollum, and Mark McCollum.

In the Gold Division Championship Tommy Pender's Angleton speedsters defeated New Iberia Westgate by 9 points in a run-and-gun fest to take the crown.

PLAYER STATS ARE FOR MEMBERS ONLY. There are two sets of individual player stats (varsity only): player single game stats and cumulative composite stats for all games recorded to-date.

Navigating to the stats.

To navigate to the player composite stats, click on the PLAYER STATS on the menu.
To find single game stats, click on the SCHEDULES AND SCORES in the left column. You should be on the Varsity TAB, then click on the game you are interested in (if a final score has been recorded). In the far right side of the page there is a link to the single game stats for each player. If the stats are all zero, that game has not yet been recorded as well as any games which followed that game.

The stats will always be entered in the order the games are played. For composite stats, you can look at the page "DATES OF MOST RECENT PAGE UPDATES" on the Home Page or sometimes on the Falcon Flashes Page. That will tell you the last game for which the stats have been entered. An explanation of each column in the stats is provided in another article on Site Usage HINTS Page.

Source of stats
It is not uncommon for the final score to be recorded on the website but no stats will have been recorded yet. You should keep in mind that getting and transcribing the stats is a tedious, error prone, time consuming task.

In addition to keeping the Clear Lake stats myself, after each varsity game I attempt to get the official stats recorded by the team's scorekeeper and statistician but they must be finished before I can photograph the stats. Sometimes we are run out of the gym before they, and consequently I, can complete their summaries of the numbers. Sometimes their bus is leaving before they are done. Often I do not get their summarized numbers until the next game or even later.

The initial stats recorded on the website come from my scorebook (I have someone record the stats for the Clear Lake team and selected stats for the opposition). In addition I take a digital picture of the official stats and scorebook and compare them with mine.  I also video record each game to resolve any disputes which might arise over the stats.

The availability of the stats on the website will sometimes lag behind the games by several days for this reason. I often cross check each game's stats for accuracy with the official scorebook. My numbers may not agree with the official book when it is initially summarized. Sometimes, the official stats are modified by the coaches after reviewing the game video. I have no way of knowing this so my numbers never change because of this.

There are a couple of stats which Ms. Gshwind and Ms. Gordon record which I do not. For example, on offense I record bad passes and other turnovers; I do not record traveling, double dribbling, and lane violations separately. On defense I do not record "altered shots", only blocked shots so some variance will exist between the two sets of stats. In addition, I am sure there are mistakes made in the official books or mine once in awhile. Those mistakes may be carried over to the web site.

I will make every effort to assure the accuracy of the numbers once they are provided to me. Any discrepancies in the website stats should be brought to my attention via email. I know these stats are important to the players and their relatives.

Comments on the stats. The stats will sometimes be slow in coming to the web site. This is due to the logistics of the process and time constraints, not any lack of importance that I place on the numbers. If the stats are wrong, it is nothing personal or intentional.
