Clear Lake 75 - Fort Bend Marshall 68

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Nov 24, 2009 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Clear Lake 75 – Fort Bend Marshall 68

District 23-5A where the Fort Bend schools reside is usually considered one of the strongest districts in the state in basketball. In pre-season rankings Fort Bend Marshall was expected to struggle to make the playoffs (must make top 4 in the talent laden district). That was until they upset #3 state ranked Duncanville and their 6’11” guard (Perry Jones) 61-60 in one of the premier tournaments in the state, the McDonalds' Texas Invitational held two weekends ago in Pasadena. That game also showcased the talents of Marshall Head Coach Gary Nichols who is regarded as one of the best coaches in the area.

As a result of their tournament play the Marshall Buffalos came into the game Tuesday evening at Marshall having already played 7 games compared to Clear Lake’s 2 games so far this season. All this did not bode well for the Falcons as they faced their worthy opponents especially when you consider Lake’s last game against the La Porte Bulldogs where Lake seemed to struggle to maintain their focus at times in the second half.

All of this considered makes the Falcons victory over the Buffs even more satisfying. The Falcons were well prepared, confident, and capable in what could only be described as a fun and exiting high school basketball game. The consistently close game was tied at 30 with 59 seconds remaining in the first half, tied again four times in the third quarter, and knotted at 67 with only 2:12 remaining in the game. Lake held a slight lead most of the game with Lake’s largest lead by 12 with 4:06 remaining but the lead changed repeatedly in the final quarter. With 1 minute remaining it was 68-67, Marshall up by 1. A basket, rebounds and free throws by Brick Pomeroy made it 68-73 with 10 seconds remaining as Pomeroy was not to be denied. The small contingent of Lake fans who braved the inclement weather remained uneasy almost until the final play of the game where Kris Henderson, who had just reentered the game after a Marshall timeout at 10 seconds, impressively picked the pocket of Marshall’s guard and drove for an uncontested layup to score the final basket at the buzzer and put the icing on the cake (see photo on Home Page).

With the exception of difficulty inbounding the ball this was a solid team performance despite a not-so-impressive second quarter (Falcons scored only 7 points, Buffs 18). Several players stepped up their game to help clinch this victory. Brick Pomeroy, Jacob Horton, Blake Gregorcyk, Randall Hollimon, and Rob Lewis started and provided the foundation that the team built upon. Our young guards held their own and did not show their youth and inexperience nearly as much as in the La Porte game and for the first time in a long time the Falcons actually out rebounded their opponents. Lake’s strength off the bench was evident and will continue to be a positive factor in many of our close games this season. Even seasoned basketball fans had to be impressed with the Falcons’ preparedness and performance this early in the season. They came noticeably ready to play and they showed what they can do.

The Falcons face the Santa Fe Indians at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the CCISD Classic Tournament at Krueger Field House. The tournament bracket can be found on the “Tournament News” Page of this website.
