Graves County Kentucky 54 - Clear Lake 50

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Dec 14, 2009 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Tuesday evening all the elements of a great high school basketball game were in place for the start of the second round of play in the Fort Walton Beach Blowout Classic. An electric atmospere in a mostly full, cozy gymnasium with vocal contigents supporting both teams,  a gaggle of Graves County cheerleaders stoking their crowd, and two teams eager to win and advance to the Championship game on Wednesday night.

In the first round Clear Lake had put on an impressive display of offense in their easy victory over Crestview High School while Graves County had to struggle to prevail in their game against P.K. Yonge out of Gainesville Florida.

The Graves County squad was very well coached and a very well rounded team. Against Clear Lake they played their inside game during the first half and did not resort to their outside game until early in the second half when they started falling behind before relying on their outside guns to quickly put them back into the contest. The close game was tied in each of the first three quarters and three times in the final quarter. The last tie (at 40) was with 5:13 remaining in the game when Graves had 7 unanswered points to take the lead at 45-40. Clear Lake would not regain the lead from this point despite a valiant effort.

Clear Lake's approach to winning basketball games this season has been to overpower their opponents with their impressive offense. But there is more to winning a game against a quality opponent than lots of offense as the Falcons were once again reminded. Despite being outrebounded 47-19, it was a close game that could have gone either way.

This was the reason we came to Florida. To play a quality opponent and strive to improve all aspects of Lake's game.

Pasadena Memorial 58 - Clear Lake 48

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Dec 14, 2009 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

 Two years in a row!

Good shooters could not hit their shots. Sometimes the shots don't fall. Sometimes the vision of riding in the limo and all its amenities at Winter Formal later the same evening causes distraction. Who knows?

Memorial scored 21 of 28 (10 more points) on free throws;  Lake shot 11 of 17 in a 10 point loss. Referees were both very junior, first year varsity refs. Lake had 25 fouls called on them. Team average this season is 16.8.

Clear Lake 65 - Dobie 51

Posted by Donald Wilkerson at Dec 14, 2009 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )

After his worst outing of his high school career in the Pasadena Memorial game on Friday, Blake Greogorcyk came out early with a hot hand and hit 5 of 5 from 3 point land in the first half (17 points in the half). In the second half he hit 2 of 6 3's (the school record is 9 3's in a regulation game). He did not play much in the last four minutes. When you add up his steals and assists, this was Blake's best varsity performance of his career. Thank goodness the Winter Formal is behind us.
