2001 St Margaret's Fall Face-Off - Final

Posted by Jeff Mauro at Oct 11, 2001 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
North Allegheny wins St Margarets for the first time ! As unbelievable as it may sound, Hampton and North Allegheny entered last night's St Margarets FALL FACEOFF final having never winning the title ! Especially for the Tigers and new head coach Brian Hershberger, North Allegheny has been on the verge for many years. Early on it looked as if NA was on a familiar path as five 1st period panalties put the Tigers in a hole as Sean Ek gave Hampton its only lead early in the first. North Allegheny survived as the game reached its midway point tied at 2-2. In any big game, you always look for the gamebreaker and NA has crusty Dan Lobas and the skilled Tim Ward, who tallied goals in the second to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead they would never relinquish. Joe Smarto added another goal late in the 2nd and it was now 5-2. Thierry Clermont and the North Allegheny defense smothered any potential Hampton comeback by allowing only 6 shots in the 3rd period and Lobas completed the hat trick to seal the victory. The championship was the first St Margarets title for the Tigers as this confident group heads toward the start of the PIHL regular season.

2001 St Margarets Fall Face Off - Semi-Final

Posted by Jeff Mauro at Oct 9, 2001 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Hampton mounts big comeback to defeat North Hills Hampton coach Craig Clontz took over the ranks for the Talbots this season and was looking to see how his young squad would fair against Penguin Cup AAA Semi Finalist North Hills. North Hills was up to its old trick as the Indians raced to a 3-0 lead in the games first 8 minutes on goals by Derek Stein, Ryan Costello and Dan Peters. NH continued its pressure on freshman goaltender Lindsay Bonasso with 14 first period shots, but she came up big and kept the Indians from further damage. The teams traded goals in the 2nd period as Bonasso was pelted with 11 more shots and the teams went to the break with North Hills in command 4-1. As the teams left the ice, North Hills looked as they didn't even need to show up for the third only surrendering 9 shot through two periods. Then Hampton struck quickly in the third as Dave DiSanti and Neil Kluber tallied to bring the Talbots within 4-3. Then the magic continued as Chris Faith played a bank shot and tied the score at 4-4 with 5:43 remaining. North Hills almost regained the lead as Dan Scelfo just missed at the 5:02 mark. In the same motion Ben Daniels sent Mark Persic in alone and he made no mistake beat the NH goaltender between the legs on the ice to but Hampton in the St Margarets final for the first time ever !
