2009 Penguins Cup AAA Championship
Shaler 3 Seneca Valley 2 (2 OT)
Shaler Hockey has been in existence since 1971 and no Shaler team has ventured to the Penguins Cup in their 38 year history and for Seneca Valley, a relatively newer program, the same could be said, so this game would be a match up of two programs looking to claim their first big prize. The Titans had the better of the play early on as they outshot the Raiders 7-1 until Shaler struck at 8:36 of the opening period when Patrick Schafer one timed a Drew Martz cross ice pass through the 5-hole to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. That lead would be extended early in the second period as Schafer found the net again after Seneca failed to clear the zone beating Ryan Schutte on a wrist shot high over the glove hand side at 11:43 of the 2nd to make it 2-0. Seneca would have a 5 on 3 that they did not score on but provided a momentum shift in the game which led to a Raider goal with 1:49 to play in the period as Tyler Mesisca poked home a rebound to pull Seneca to within one at 2-1. Shaler was still carrying the play in the 3rd period but could not put the Raiders away and it cost them when with 5:33 to play Tayler Wagner kept the puck in the zone and then moments later fired a low wrist shot from the right point through the 5-hole of Shaler goaltender Oscar Prom to tie the score. The teams battled into the and through the first overtime period as both teams had decent chances but could not score. Early in the 2nd overtime, Billy Dobson just missed only six seconds in, then Logan Pfeffer would have the game on his stick just missing on the backhand of a wide open net at 8:49 and the very next trip up the ice resulted in a shot that will be remembered in Shaler Hockey for a long time as Shane Shiring unleashed a wicked low slap shot which trickled past Ryan Schutte, sending the Shaler fans into a frenzy and giving the Titans their first Penguins Cup title in school history.
2009 Penguins Cup A Championship
Mars 3 Bishop McCort 2
PITTSBURGH –
A lot has been written and a lot said about Mars throughout the season, but the simple fact is that this team has been the number one team in Class A for most of the season and since their Penguins Cup loss a year ago looking to atone for what happened at Mellon Arena losing to Quaker Valley and this game would be an opportunity for the Planets to claim their first ever Penguins Cup and move on to Saturday’s State Championship game against 2009 Flyers Cup champions Bayard Rustin. In their path would be a Bishop McCort team and program with a long tradition of Penguins Cup excellence including five Pennsylvania State Class A Championships. Mars would strike first in this game in the 1st period on the power play as Michael Mazzota unleashed a long slap shot from the center point that beat McCort goaltender Jimmy Stenger on a the stick side at 10:33. McCort woul tie the contest at 8:18 of the 2nd period on a bang bang play as Matt Hotlz drilled home a Dane Domonkos rebound to tie the score at one apiece. Brady Sipe would give the Planets the lead with 9:11 to go in regulation as he fired a wrist shot upstairs past Stenger to make it 2-1 in favor of Mars. A little insurance came Mars way on terrific passing play as Andrew Santa finished off a passing play between Derek Sitterly and Matt Wingert with 4:24 to go to make it 3-1 Planets. Dane Domonkos pulled the Crimson Crushers back to within one with 2:56 to play on a power play goal on a rebound of a Kurtis Straw shot from the left point and McCort still had a chance. Mars goaltender Taylor Stepke stopped 28 of 29 shots in the game and several over the last few minutes to give the Mars Planets their first ever Penguins Cup championship.
