Central Catholic 9 Franklin Regional 3 NEW KENSINGTON – Central Catholic [13-7-2], the # 7 seed and Franklin Regional [11-11-0], the # 10 seed squared off in the opening round of the 2006 Penguins Cup playoffs. The Vikings have enjoyed a nice run in the Penguins Cup playoffs since Kevin Zielmanski took the helm in 1998, winning it the first year, but have been unable to get the prize they want the most, which is a State Championship. CC went to the finals the very next year in 1999 losing to Meadville in overtime 2-1 on a goal by Nick Tucci and has not been back since. Franklin Regional, on the other hand has a decent history in getting to the Penguins Cup, the latest in 2003 losing to Meadville at RMU Neville Island Sports Center, which Head Coach Jim Daugherty was a part of, with 5 trips including only one at AAA and 4 consecutive at Class AA in 1993,1994,1995 and 1996. The Panthers have never captured a Western Pennsylvania Championship. Both schools prior to 1999 won a couple of WPIHL Championships and have a great history with strong hockey presence. The Vikings struck first as Chris Urso won the face of to the left of Franklin Regional goaltender Anthony Livescchi, beat the centerman and lofted a wrist shot through the stick side for a 1-0 lead for CC. Central Catholic went on the power play and at 3:51 cashed in as Josh Martin’s shot from the right point was re-directed on its way to the net by Joe Kerr to make it 2-0. With 48 seconds remaining in the opening period, # 16 snuck into the middle of the ice Andy Hanno took a perfect feed from Glenn Sherwin and beat Livescchi low to the stick side to make the count 3-0, as the Vikings outshot the Panthers by a 6-5 margin. Franklin got on the board at 10:42 on the power play as Joey Nicoletti picked up a loose puck in the circle and buried a wrist shot high over the stick hand side over Bobby Magyerics. Central Catholic went on a 5 on 3 power play and cashed in again as Chris Urso picked up a loose puck on the doorstep and deposited it into an empty net past James ‘not Bobby’ Orr at 7:41 to make it 4-1 and just 40 seconds later the Vikings lit the lamp again at 7:07 as C.J. Burke scored on a Josh Martin rebound turning this one into a CC runaway 5-1 with a power play goal. With 5:34 Turner Andritz scored to cut the lead to 5-2. CC went back on the 5 on 3 and C.J. Burke scored with 4:01 remaining to make it 6-2. With 33 seconds remaining in the 2nd period, Joel Sirianni scored for FR to cut the CC lead to 6-3. Then with just 10 seconds left before the ice cut, Bryan Dietz beat James Orr on the short side to push the Viking lead to 7-3. On to the third period and Franklin Regional goaltender # 3 in the game, Adam Treml and the Vikings rudely welcomed him as Chris Urso completed the hat trick at 14:28 to make it an 8-3 punishment of the Panthers. With 9:57 remaining in regulation Glenn Sherwin tipped a Josh Martin shot between the legs of Treml to make it a 9-3 advantage for the Vikings. Central Catholic piled up the shots in the third period and walked away with an impressive 9-3 victory in front of an intimate gathering at the Valley Sports Complex.

VALENCIA - Pine Richland 6 West Allegheny 0 A who’s who night of Western Pennsylvania AA Hockey tonight as yours truly and Earl ‘Mr Center Ice’ Bugaile’ headed a star studded cast as Ed ‘Jake’ Jacobs, some ‘Concerned Citizens of Montour’, the Kittanning coaching staff of Jon Yackmack, Lee Grafton and Jamie King, former PR coach Bobby Black, Brian Cole, Quaker Valley assistant Jim Miller, Dave ‘Robin the Boy Wonder’, Joe Avi, Joe Ritchey, Hampton’s Brian Steckel among the Concerned Citizens of Pine Richland and West Allegheny Pine Richland and West Allegheny entered this evening’s game holding down the top 2 spots in Class AA for the upcoming Penguins Cup playoffs and the winner would capture the # 1 seed position. Both teams are looking to keep the playoff edge as the opening round will be contested later this week and WA and PR will await the first round winners for action beginning next week. Norm Cook and Jimmy Black both feel their teams have a great shot at capture their respective schools first ever Penguins Cup at Mellon Arena on March 25th. Pine Richland didn’t take long to strike as a streaking Josh Fodor converted a feed from Jordan Yoklic at 14:32 for a quick 1-0 lead. Kyle Mortimer made the game’s first big save at 10:32, stopping multiple cracks and the 2nd rebound for Jordan Yoklic from point blank range. The Rams made it 2-0 as George Saad walked the puck out of the corner and beat Mortimer squeezing the puck through the 5 hole at 9:12. Pine Richland continued to dominate the opening period and with 1:08 remaining in opening period as Jordan Yoklic tipped a long shot off the stick of Geoff Bagnato. Sweet replaced Mortimer in goal to start the second period. George Saad pounced on a Brian Miller rebound at 10:48 and beat Sweet to make it 4-0. The Rams just kept on coming and at 7:52, they would not be denied as Brian Miller banged home a rebound of linemate George Saad to turn this on into a 5-0 runaway. At 8:19, the Rams lit the lamp again as George Saad completed the hat trick with an assist to Brian Miller and a 6-0 lead. With 4:29 remaining, Stoney Hildreth kept his shutout stopping Jeff Cupelli. Pine Richland earned a convincing 6-0 win over the Indians and has built quite a bit of momentum for the upcoming playoffs and will also be the # 1 seed.

SPECIAL REPORT FROM ERIE TIMES NEWS By JASON SNYDER Contributing writer By completing one shutout, McDowell goalie John Cleary earned another. Cleary capped a perfect career against hockey rival Cathedral Prep on Wednesday with the Trojans' 6-0 PIHL West win over the Ramblers at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. It was the senior goaltender's sixth win in six tries against the Ramblers (13-24-1, 8-14-0 PIHL), whose playoff chances are all but gone with eight straight losses to end the season. Behind Cleary's play in net and two goals and an assist by junior Brandon Oathout, the Trojans (19-15-1, 12-7-1 PIHL) put two potentially dangerous games against Prep behind them. "Every time we play them, I seem to get hot," said Cleary, who had 22 saves. "It might just be that Prep-McDowell rivalry that makes you want to give everything you can." For the second straight game, McDowell took a period to get going offensively, leading just 1-0 after the first off a goal by Nick DiSanti. Ryan Adams opened a four-goal second period for the Trojans with an unassisted goal off a blast from outside the blue line. Oathout, who assisted DiSanti's goal, scored on back-to-back breakaways. "(I thought), let's just bury one and put them away," Oathout said. "It was senior night and we wanted to do it for those guys and we came out and did it." Trevor Shaw and Tyler Nolf closed the Trojans' scoring. McDowell outshot Prep 45-22 and killed four Rambler power plays. Prep's biggest scoring opportunity came in the first period when a bouncing puck appeared to be on its way into the net. "Ed Maras basically saved my shutout for me," Cleary said. "He made a great dive across the net to stop the puck, and if it wasn't for that, it could have been a 1-1 game and anything could have happened." McDowell coach Paul Mancini was happy to see Cleary earn the shutout after he missed it with a last-minute goal by the Ramblers last week. "John's a rock for us," Mancini said. "We kind of owed him one after the last game. We wanted to make sure that didn't happen again." McDowell, already a lock for the PIHL postseason, still must face powers Upper St. Clair and Meadville before its playoff seeding is determined. "We're on a bit of a hot streak now,"Oathout said. "We beat Fox Chapel in overtime and now these guys twice, so hopefully we'll carry the momentum on the road."

Team Pittsburgh Head Coach Paul Taibi of Mt Lebanon has been selected to guide Team Pittsburgh at the 2006 Chicago Showcase. Coach Taibi has led the Blue Devils to a perfect 22-0-0 regular season in Class AAA heading into the 2006 Penguins Cup playoffs and 2006 Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championships at RMU Island Sports Center on April 8th. The 22nd Chicago Showcase will be held on April 19 - 23, 2006 at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, Illinois. The tournament features teams from all over the United States and Team Pittsburgh will compete TOP A Bracket [J.J. O'Conner] with the likes of Minnesota, New York , and California and others. A year ago Team Pittsburgh went on a near magical run losing in the Semi-Finals to Team Minnesota. This tournament is a great opportunity to be seen by Junior A, Division 1 and NCAA Collegiate and ACHA Division 1 scouts and an opportunity to further a players high school career into a higher education and also continue playing hockey. Canevin 4 Peters Twp 3 SOUTHPOINTE – When we last saw Peters Twp it was in the form of Peters 66, who were dropping an 8-4 decision to Kittanning. Coach Rick Tingle’s squad would have five more players present this evening for a tilt with Canevin tied with the Crusaders with 13-5-0 and 12-4-2 records coming into tonight’s game. Canevin had a great opportunity to pull ahead of Peters in the standings last Friday night, but dropped a 4-1 decision to Moon. At stake tonight is an opportunity to keep pace with Montour and capture the inside edge on the third seed in the upcoming playoffs, since both teams hold the tiebreaker over the Spartans by virtue of winning contests earlier in the season. Goaltending set the early tone as Canevin’s Josh Daley was stopped by Mike Mastracci at 12:34 and Peter’s Dustin Roux was stopped by Joey Ziemanski at 10:09. The Indians struck first as Jeff Hannan backhanded a backdoor pass from Gerry Raymond past the Canevin goaltender at 6:47. Less than a minute later, Brandon Tingle cashed in on a quick shot at 5:52 off a cross ice pass from Dustin Roux. Mastracci made a diving save on Josh Daley with 2:18 left in the opening period and Peters displayed great penalty killing on a 5 on 3 late in the first. On to the second period and both teams played an even period through the opening ten minutes. The Crusaders cut the lead with 2:47 left as Jason Rogerio scored on a slapshot that snuck by the stick side of Mike Mastracci to make it 2-1. Peters came right back 30 seconds later as Eric Windmueller converted a Dustin Roux pass to extend the lead to 3-1. Canevin’s Michael Darnely would not be denied as he was caught on the backcheck and fought it off by turning and wrsiting a shot past Mastracci to cut the lead to 3-2 heading to the ice cut. The Crusaders had several opportunities to tie the game at the 9 ½ minute mark but Mastracci was equal to the task. Canevin tied the game as Josh Daley scored on a rebound at 8:32 to make it a new hockey game at 3-3. With 6:14 to play Jason Rogerio got the puck at center ice and was in on the breakaway and beat Mastracci on the forehand to give the Crusaders a 4-3 lead. Canevin played hard in the final 6 minutes and Peters pulled the goalie but could not score and the Crusaders held on for a huge 4-3 win over Peters Twp.
