Quatman Trophy Not to be in 2003

Posted by Mark Dietz at Jul 16, 2003 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Cobalts drop to 21-10 after a lackluster loss to the Hilltoppers. From top to bottom: fielding, hitting, relief pitching, and third base-coaching all were lacking on Wednesday night. A few highlights worthy of note: * Joe Spriggs Monster taking Wags deep with Wood Bat (magic of the Sabo Glove continues) * TR and Spriggsy baiting KHat to "dash" for home (despite a 10-4 lead and a short backstop) * 11 Broken bats for Stiggy's Shack to replace by tonight * Glen Hock working the sparse Bosley crowd with his Vic Vegas Lounge Act after the game AABC Tourney starts Sunday (3:30 Roselawn versus Swingers). Cobalts/Hilltoppers Part IV should happen Monday night. Until then: Thursday - Stogies 8:30 Roselawn, wear gold Friday - Mo's Boys 6:30 Roselawn, wear blue and grey pants image

Cobalts Capture Outlaws in Game 2

Posted by Mark Dietz at Jul 13, 2003 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
On a great day for baseball this past Sunday, the Cobalts split a double-header against the nationally ranked Evansville Outlaws (a tough 5-3 loss in game #1) winning Game #2 with a strong 4-1 performance. TR O'Brien and Dan Reineke combined for the Win. Joe Spriggs (5-6, 2 doubles) and Doug Michelsen (3-3 with 2 RBI in Game 2) led the offense. Timely hitting from Bo Stineman, Frank Arnold, John Rubel, and Todd Hiler also contributed big. But the really BIG story on the day was center fielder Nicko "Sheriff" Frisch. He single-handidly robbed the Outlaws of 6 extra base hits with SPECTACULAR plays in both games. Cobalts now stand at 21-9 for the 2003 season. Back to work this week as the regular season winds up strong: Wednesday: Hilltoppers (8:30 Hille, wear blue with white pants) Thursday: Blue Note Stogies (8:30 Roselawn, wear gold) Friday: Mo's Boys (6:30 Roselawn, wear blue with grey pants)image

Cobalts Win 20th for Fifth Straight Year

Posted by Mark Dietz at Jul 11, 2003 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
With a solid 8-6 victory over the Cincinnati College Challenge Team on Friday night, the Cobalts improve to 20-8 on the season. Victor "are you done" Carreon (4-1) and Tony "white Caddy" Aichel (4th save) got the job done on the hill. Doug "we're not Semi" Michelsen continued his torrid hitting going 4-4 with four runs scored and two doubles. Nick "I'm back" Frisch lead a solid defensive game. Next up: Nationall Ranked Evansville Outlaws (Sunday noon double-header @ McNick Rocket Stadium - wearing both gold/blue)image
The Cobalts take their hats off to all of our brothers and sisters serving the country overseas but especially recognize two of our very own: Mike Gililand (US Army: Iraq) and Tim "Dancer" Burt (US Airforce: Iraq). Gilly is a long-time Cobalt who has made 3 retirement returns. He roamed center field in our first Roy Hobbs World Series (2000) and proved that he can still hit at the Semi Pro level no matter how many drill instructors try and ruin his weekends. Dancer is perhaps our number one fan over the past 15 years. He personally undertook the painting of mascot "Toby" and has annoyed umpires from behind the backstop in many a Friday night game. We are proud to be part of these brave soldiers' families and wish them a safe and speedy return to their immediate families and the Cobalts. Godspeed CoBALTS!!!image
