League award winners announced

Following are the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League major award winners for the 2006 season. All awards were voted on by the member teams, with voting compiled by league statistician Burton Russell. • Most valuable player -- Craig Higgins, Truro Bearcats. - Batting champion (.488 average) - Led league in hits (59) and was second in doubles (12), home runs (8) and RBI (37). - Second in league in innings pitched (79) and strikeouts (75). • Gary MacDonald Memorial Golden Bat and Golden Glove Award (most game MVP awards in a season) -- Craig Higgins, Truro Bearcats. • Coach of the year -- Chris Salsman, Kentville Wildcats. - Coached Kentville to a 23-11 record for second place. • All-star team: - Catcher: Matt Denney, Sydney Sooners (.224 BA, 5 doubles) - First base: Craig Higgins, Truro Bearcats (.488 BA, 8 home runs, 37 RBI) - Second base: Ryan Brothers, Kentville Wildcats (.402 BA, 15 stolen bases) - Third base (tie): Adam Lucas, Halifax Pelham Canadians (.331 BA, 25 RBI) and Chris Goodie, Dartmouth Moosehead Dry (.352 BA, 29 RBI) - Shortstop: Ian Lockhart, Kentville Wildcats (.436 BA, 13 stolen bases) - Outfield: Geoff MacLellan, Sydney Sooners (.415 BA, 24 stolen bases); Joe MacPherson, Truro Bearcats (.369 BA, 7 home runs, 29 RBI); Chris Head, Dartmouth Moosehead Dry (.333 BA, 27 stolen bases). - Left-handed pitcher: Jason Bailey, Dartmouth Moosehead Dry (6-2, 1.60 ERA, 82 strikeouts). - Right-handed pitcher: Steve Nelson, Dartmouth Moosehead Dry (7-1, 1.78 ERA, 71 strikeouts). - Designated hitter: Darren Doucette, Dartmouth Moosehead Dry (.351 BA, 15 home runs, 42 RBI).

League championship schedule finalized

The best-of-seven championship series between the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry and Kentville Wildcats will begin Friday night at Beazley Field in Dartmouth at 7:30 p.m. The full series schedule can be viewed by clicking on the "Schedules" or "Calendar" links on the left-hand side of the page.

Dry return to league final

The Dartmouth Moosehead Dry scored seven times in the third inning en route to a 13-3 win over visiting Truro Bearcats tonight in the fifth and deciding game of their semifinal series. Dartmouth will play the Kentville Wildcats in a best-of-seven final, scheduled to begin Friday in Dartmouth at 7:30 p.m. The rest of the schedule will be announced later this week. Wildcats oust Sooners

Winning pitcher Tim Clayton tossed a complete-game five-hitter as the Kentville Wildcats advanced to the league final with a 5-2 win over the Sydney Sooners in the fifth and deciding game of their semifinal series this afternoon. Both semifinals will go the distance

The Dartmouth Moosehead Dry forced a Game 5 with the Truro Bearcats thanks to a 12-2 road win tonight, and the Kentville Wildcats and Sydney Sooners will also need a fifth and deciding game after splitting a doubleheader today in Kentville.
