Dry defeat Wildcats, close in on first

The Dartmouth Moosehead Dry defeated host Kentville Wildcats 3-1 tonight at Memorial Park in Kentville.

Dartmouth can clinch first place with a victory Thursday night at home to the Truro Bearcats.

Kentville concludes its regular season with an 11-13 record and will finish in fourth place.

Dartmouth scores twice in ninth to edge Truro

The Dartmouth Moosehead Dry scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to snap a 4-4 tie and defeat host Truro Bearcats 6-4 tonight at the TAAC Grounds in Truro.

Dartmouth is now 1.5 games ahead of second-place Halifax. Truro can now finish no higher than second.

Darren Doucette homered twice for the winners. Joe MacPherson, Guy Pellerine and J.P. Wood had two hits apiece for the Bearcats. Trevor Zwaan was the winning pitcher. John Chapman took the loss.

The Bearcats donated gate receipts from tonight's game, totalling $456, for breast cancer research.

Field finalized for senior nationals

The field has been finalized for the 2009 Canadian senior baseball championship which begins in 10 days in Dartmouth and Halifax.

The tournament will feature the host Dartmouth Moosehead Dry, national champion in 1998 and 2004. Nova Scotia is being represented by the Halifax Pelham Canadians, the reigning provincial champion.

Other Atlantic teams include the St. John’s WINMAR Capitals from Newfoundland and Labrador, and two New Brunswick entrees -- the Fredericton Royals, the 2008 New Brunswick champions, and the 2008 runner-up Chatham Ironmen.

Quebec is represented by Team Quebec, while the Windsor Stars will represent Ontario. Rounding out the championship contenders are Manitoba’s Brandon Marlins, the Fort Saskatchewan Athletics from Alberta, and the Trail, B.C., Orioles.

The Dartmouth Moosehead Dry moved into first place with a pair of 3-2 decisions today over the host Halifax Pelham Canadians on Harold Pelham Day at the Mainland Common, the second game lasting 11 innings.
