Sooners Win First Title Since 1989

Posted by Jeff Lockhart at Oct 11, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Sydney Sooners won their 4th Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League Championship (previous: ’82 / ’83 / ’89) and the first in 24 years, when they defeated the Kentville Widcats 9–4, in game seven of the best of seven Championship Final round, at the Susan McEachern Memorial Ball Park, in front of over 1500 excited hometown fans. The Sooners did it in dramatic fashion, as they had done throughout the playoffs, as they trailed in game six, 6-2 in the eight inning and Kentville within six outs of capturing the title. Sooners scored four runs in that eight inning to tie the score. In the eight inning Cory Christie lead off with a solo home run to cut the lead to 6-3. Then with one out, Phil Brown, pinch hitter Justin Brewer, and Sean Ferguson recorded back to back singles; Ferguson’s scoring the fourth run, setting the score at 6-4. With two outs and runners on second and third, lead off hitter Jeff MacKinnon stroked a single to left field scoring two runs and notching the game at even 6-6. That left the 9th inning heroics to Justin Brewer, as with two outs and teammate Duncan MacDougall on first base, he hit a towering two run “walk off” home run over the left field fence to win the ball game 8-6. On the mound Sooners pitcher Paul Doucette picked up his second complete game pitching victory. Kentville’s Curtis Falls took the loss in relief of Codey Shrider despite limited Sooners to eight hits, five of them coming in that exciting eight inning. Sooners then went on to score five runs in the first inning of the Championship Game to take a commanding lead they were not to relinquish, winning 9-4. Justin Brewer with the pitching win, with relief help from Kenny Long in the seventh, kept the Wildcats in check. Starter Colby Turple, relieved in the second by Kevin Nichols, who in turn was relieved in the fifth by Joey Cavidini handled the Kentville pitching. Sooners will now represent the Province at the Canadian Senior Baseball Nationals in Newfoundland in August of 2014.
