NSSBL president/CAO to step down

Posted by Jody Jewers at Nov 15, 2008 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
At the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League's fall meeting, held Saturday, November 15, in Dartmouth, NSSBL president and chief administrative officer Jim McEachern informed the league he is stepping down after seven seasons.

Mr. McEachern noted he plans to take a more active role within the Sydney Sooners organization, and will continue to serve in a league executive capacity as past-president.

A three-member committee has begun a search for a replacement, with the committee to give its recommendation at the league's next meeting, scheduled for March 21, 2009. Mr. McEachern remains president/CAO until then.

The league is also accepting applications for new teams for the 2009 season. Deadline is February 15.

Canadians, alumni game postponed

Posted by Jody Jewers at Oct 31, 2008 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Today's exhibition game between the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League champion Halifax Pelham Canadians and an alumni team featuring Bill (Spaceman) Lee has been postponed because of an illness in Lee's family.

The reigning Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League champion Halifax Pelham Canadians will be facing a team comprised of Pelham Canadians alumni on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m. at the Mainland Common in Halifax.

Toeing the rubber for the alumni will be none other than 14-year Major League Baseball veteran Bill (Spaceman) Lee, who played in the NSSBL with the Moncton Mets and Sydney Sooners.

The crafty southpaw is a three-time 17-game winner with the Boston Red Sox, with whom he threw from 1969-78. Lee spent the final four years of his MLB career with the Montreal Expos, winning 16 games in 1979. He posted a career record of 119-90 with a 3.92 earned-run average and 713 strikeouts.

The 61-year-old Lee made a mound appearance in June, when he threw six-plus innings and picked up the win for the Alaska Goldpanners in a 10-6 victory over the Southern California Running Birds in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the annual Midnight Sun game played on the night of the summer solstice, when the sun is only below the horizon for about an hour.

Lee, the chairman-for-life of the Bluenose BoSox Brotherhood, has penned four books, run for president of the United States, and been the subject of a documentary film. He will be at Boston Pizza in Dartmouth Crossing at 5 p.m., for a fundraising dinner, auction, autograph and Q&A session, with proceeds for the IWK Children's Hospital and minor baseball.

Tickets are $10 and are available through Don Hyslop at hyslop@av.eastlink.ca.
