Doucette homers in Prince George victory

Dartmouth Moosehead Dry player-coach Darren Doucette belted a second-inning solo home run for the Prince George Axemen in an 8-4 victory over Germany on Friday in the opening game of the Enbridge Northern Gateway World Baseball Challenge in Prince George, B.C.

Prince George faces the Bahamas on Saturday at 7 p.m., Atlantic time. Dartmouth's Jason Bailey, and Barrett Bellefontaine and Brandon Hunter from the Halifax Pelham Canadians are also playing for the Axemen. Bellefontaine pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing one hit, walking four and striking out one. Hunter singled and drove in a pair of runs.

Canadians edge Dry in pitching duel

Steve Ivey allowed just two Matt Thomas hits as the Halifax Pelham Canadians edged host Dartmouth Moosehead Dry 3-2 tonight at Beazley Field. Dartmouth's Matt McDonald gave up only seven hits. Both chuckers totalled 10 strikeouts.

Pitcher Jason Bailey and designated hitter Darren Doucette from the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry, and pitcher Barrett Bellefontaine and outfielder Brandon Hunter from the Halifax Pelham Canadians are in Prince George, B.C., for the Enbridge Northern Gateway World Baseball Challenge tournament, which runs through July 26.

The quartet is part of the 40-man roster for the host Prince George Axemen.

The six-team round-robin begins Friday, with Prince George squaring off against Germany. Also competing are the Bahamas, Team B.C., Team Canada, and the United States.

Higgins handcuffs Wildcats' bats

Craig Higgins tossed a complete-game four-hitter and struck out 10 as the Truro Bearcats doubled up the Kentville Wildcats 4-2 tonight at the TAAC Grounds in Truro. Joe MacPherson and Matt Davis had two hits apiece for the Bearcats.
