Truro Takes Game One

Posted by Jody Jewers at Sep 14, 2003 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Dartmouth Moosehead Dry committed six errors, including two in the eighth accounting for four unearned runs, to contribute to their 12-8 loss to the Truro Maple Leaf Foods Bearcats. Truro leads the series 1-0. Winston Brown hit a single driving in two in the first to draw first blood. Dartmouth brought the score back to even at 3 in the third when Darren Hiltz drove in a run with a single. Truro used a suicide squeeze in the fourth to regain the lead, but that was relenquished When Jamie Vallis and Greg West went back to back with homeruns to give the Dry a 6-4 edge. After Brown and MacPherson each doubled, pinch-hitter Shawn Fuller tied the game with a single. After a throwing error, Jeff Chishom drove in the seventh Bearcat run with a signle. A pass ball plated Truro's eighth run and Matt Mayo brought home a pair to give Truro the 10-6 lead. West and Hiltz each doubled in runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Jeff Chishom struck out Nick Best to stifle the rally. Chad Sawler (1-1) took the loss while Mark Stiner (2-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Kelly Spencer.

Dry Return to Finals

Posted by Jody Jewers at Sep 11, 2003 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
A four run fifth highlighted by two Halifax errors gave Dartmouth a 7-2 lead that they would hold to take the series 4-3 and gain a berth into this year's finals. Halifax had taken a 2-0 lead in the first when Jay Turple connected for a two-run blast. Ryan Veinot had reached base on a single, and although Trevor Zwaan (1-1) had caught him leaning, Veinot was able to elude Darren Doucette with some nifty base running to remain on base for the Turple homerun. The Dry answered in the second when Ryan Doucette plated a pair with a single. Dartmouth took the lead in the third on an RBI double by Greg West. In the fifth Dartmouth loaded the bases with one out. Darren Hiltz hit a ground ball to Halifax first baseman Jay Turple who came home with the ball to force out Darren Doucette. Catcher Gregor McPherson fired back to first to attempt a completion of the 3-2-3 double play, but the ball glanced off Hiltz to allow the Dry's fourth run to score. Ryan Doucette drove in another with an RBI single to make the score 5-2. Sheldon MacDonald came in to relieve Canadians' starter Chris Munroe (1-1). Jason Irvine ripped a single to right-fielder Ian Bower who could not come up with the short-hop as Dartmouth scored two more. Halifax got one more back with a Dave Cowan homer in the sixth and brought the score to 7-5 thanks to a pair of Dry errors in the seventh. Adam Lucas scored on a Turple groundout and Veinot came around to score when Chris Goode committed an error on a Gregor McPherson ground ball. Halifax started to mount a two-out comeback in the eighth. After singles by Bower and Otto Gorveatt put runners at first and third, Darren Doucette robbed Adam Lucas of a base hit with a diving snag at first to end the threat. Joel Irvine brought home the Dry's eighth run with a sac fly in the eighth. Halifax had a shot in the nineth. After one out singles by Turple, McPherson and pinch hitter Jeff Dunsworth, Dave Cowan lifted what should have been a routine sac fly to Darren Hiltz in right who dropped the ball. The error ended up being of no consequence as Zwaan bared down to strikeout Cory Christie and to induce a Bower ground ball to Ryan Doucette at short who forced Cowan out at second. The Dartmouth Moosehead Dry are making their annual return to the NSSBL Finals. For the third year in a row, their opponents will be the Truro Maple Leaf Foods Bearcats.

Dry Force Game 7

Posted by Jody Jewers at Sep 9, 2003 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Dartmouth Moosehead Dry have forced a game seven with their 5-3 come from behind victory over the Halifax Pelham Canadians. Dartmouth fell behind early with Gregor MacPherson's RBI double in the first and Adam Lucas plating a pair in the second with a single. The Dry inched to within one run in the fourth with Jamie Vallis tripling in Joel Irvine and then scoring on a Greg West groundout. In the sixth, Greg West drove in Vallis for a second time with a double and came around to score the go-ahead run when Darren Hiltz banged out a double of his own. The Dry added an insurance run in the seventh with Vallis drving in Ryan Doucette with a single. Halifax tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the nineth. With two out, the normally sure handed Ryan Doucette bobbled a Jay Turple grounded and then threw the ball away to put runners at second and third. After Jason Bailey (2-1) intentionally walked Gregor MacPherson to load the bases, Bailey Struck out Brent Cooper to end the game. Bailey picked up the win, settling down to allow only three hits after the third inning. Mark Haverstock took the loss. Game seven goes Friday night in Dartmouth at Beazley Field at 7:30pm.
