Bearcats clip Canadians, clinch playoff berth

The Truro Bearcats became the second NSSBL team to punch its ticket to the postseason, downing host Halifax Pelham Canadians 7-1 tonight.

The Prince George Axemen, with Dartmouth's Jason Bailey and Darren Doucette, and Barrett Bellefontaine and Brandon Hunter from Halifax, lost 10-4 to Team B.C., today at the Enbridge Northern Gateway World Baseball Challenge in Prince George, B.C.

Bailey was the losing pitcher, allowing four runs and nine hits over six innings. Bellefontaine gave up a hit and two walks to three batters in relief. Doucette went hitless in four at-bats, while Hunter singled twice and drove in a run.

The Axemen are 2-1 in the six-team tournament. Their next game is Wednesday against the United States.

The Truro Bearcats posted a pair of victories this afternoon against the host Sydney Sooners at Susan McEachern Memorial Field.

The results mean the Halifax Pelham Canadians become the first NSSBL team to clinch a playoff berth. The top four regular-season finishers advance to the postseason.

Prince George 2-0 at World Baseball Challenge

The Prince George Axemen, which include Jason Bailey and Darren Doucette from the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry and Brandon Hunter and Barrett Bellefontaine of the Halifax Pelham Canadians, downed the Bahamas 13-3 tonight to improve their record to 2-0 at the Enbridge Northern Gateway World Baseball Challenge in Prince George, B.C.

Doucette singled twice in four at-bats, scoring three times and driving in a run. Hunter singled and scored a run. 

The Axemen play Team B.C., on Sunday at 7 p.m., Atlantic time. Live webcasts are available at www.worldbaseball.ca.

Truro tops Sydney

The Truro Bearcats defeated host Sydney Sooners 11-4 in the opener of a three-game weekend series tonight at Susan McEachern Memorial Field.
