Dartmouth to Hold Marling Tribute Night July 8
Following statement released by Dartmouth Moosehead Dry
DARTMOUTH MOOSEHEAD DRY TO HOLD CAM MARLING
TRIBUTE NIGHT
The Dartmouth Moosehead Dry will have heavy hearts when they hold a tribute Friday, July 8 for their teammate, Cam Marling, who lost his valiant fight against cancer on March 7. And the Sydney Sooners, the Dry’s opponent for the 3-game series that weekend, will feel the pain too as they had taken Marling with them as their ace pitcher to the Canadian Senior Baseball Championships in 2014 and 2015.
Through it all, however, the two teams will celebrate the Cam’s life and his love for the game of baseball, just as he and his family would have wanted. The teams will honour Cam in a ceremony that will see his jersey, #40, retired by the Dry.
In a brilliant career that began at the age of 5 and ended much too soon at the age of 25, Cam would compile an outstanding record with the Dry. In 5 years with the senior club he had a record of 20 wins and just 5 losses. His most dominant season was in 2014 when he went 8 and 0, allowing just 50 hits in 76 innings while striking out 84 batters.
It was, however, in 2015 that Cam really showed how good he really was! After being diagnosed with cancer in April, he vowed to take to the mound despite undergoing treatment that together with the disease weakened him and made every inning a challenge. Yet he went 3-1 in the regular season, throwing 51 innings, allowing 53 hits while striking out 40. He was 1-0 in the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League playoffs. And just as he had done in 2014, he took to the mound in the Sooners’ opening game at the nationals and racked up a shutout. Teams attending the national champion and the fans in attendance rose to give him a standing ovation when he left the game.
After a setback in the fall of 2015, he underwent a successful stem cell transplant on January 20, but complications let to his death a few months later. Since his passing, his mother, Char, and sisters, Shelby and Kim, have been passionate in promoting the Canadian Blood Services’ One Match Program, a worldwide registry, which encourages stem cell and bone marrow donation to help save lives.
Upon his death tributes poured in from teammates, opponents, baseball fans, and his many friends. One of the tributes said it all: “Great pitcher, great teammate, better person.”
In a testament to their departed teammate and his #40 the Dry will donate 40% of all proceeds from the game to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.
A six-man umpiring crew will be on hand to officiate the game and they have generously donated their fees to the cause.
The pre-game ceremony to celebrate Cam’s life and love of the game will begin at 7:30 at Beazley Field. Admission is $5.00 for adults, those under 18 are admitted free. A concession stand and a libation area will be available.
