Raiders lose to Cathedral 3-1

Posted by Ray Flaherty at Sep 30, 2001 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Stepping off the bus after the long ride west the Raiders knew they were in for a very tough game. Ranked number one in the WEst, Springfield Cathedral was waiting to show their dominance. Dominate they did for about 10 minutes. Scoring two quick goals the Purple menace had a distinct advantage over CCHS. The boys settled down and gave Cathedral all they could handle in the first half, missing out on some good opportunities to score, missing an open net and a bouncer off the bar. The second half was a good one as Cathedral scored on a nice play while Central's Mike Casale connected to make it 3-1. From that point on the raiders dominated play..hitting the bar several times and just not getting any luck. This however may have been just what the team needed to see its capabilities ans they got some good performances off the bench by the subs. The raiders now stand at 3-2-1 overall and play Haverhill Sunday, September 30 7 PM at haverhill Stadium.image

Led by multiple scorers, Ross Tremblay (2) and Alan Fielding(2) the raiders scored early and often in defeating city rival Lawrence 6-0. Adding goals for the Raiders were Jeff Gannon and Jon Kasper. The Raiders improve to 3-1-1 in MVC Play and play next on Saturday at Springfield Cathedral 11 AM and return quickly to action on Sunday night at Haverhill Stadium at 7 PM. image
Ryan McCarthy of Lowell scored a goal off Jeff Gannon's indirect kick with 10 minutes left to play as the Raiders tied Andover in an MVC Div. 1 game. Andover had taken a 1-0 lead when Mike Grieco scored on a penalty kick midway through the first half. John McGinness of Dracut had a strong game in goal for Central Catholic. Tim Bourque, Sean Burkhardt and Jon Kasper also played well for the Raiders.
STrawberry Fields forever.....an old Beatle tune or a raider victory song? Whatever it is it has been good. Central rallied once againd in the soceond half with two nice goals for a convincing win over Dracut. The loss put Dracut's league record at 1-2 while the Raiders improved to 2-0 in the league. The first goal was a nice one as Mike Casale crossed a low ball across the mouth and Ross Tremblay connected as the goalie tried to recover to his left. The second goal with just 2 minutes remaining clinched the victory and this time Casale was on the receiving end of the pass. Jeff Gannon lofted a nice corner to the head of Jon Kasper who neatly laid it on the head of Mike Casale who promptly tucked it past the Dracut goalie. Picture Perfect. The Raiders now take on 3-0 Lowell in Lowell on SEpt 20th under the lights 7PM at Cawley memorial Stadium.
