Ol' Bloomie ran well (16th overall - 21:08), but placed 10 seconds out of prize contention Saturday at the Kent County Parks & Rec 5K at Killens Pond State Park. Uncle Vern paced the Special Saucers with an 8th-place finish 19:47, good enough for a trophy. Special Sauce Insider congratulates Wesley CCer Matt Lindell on his fifth-place finish at 18:42 -- just behind CR's Jed Mountz (that's right, behind). MHS alum Ben Wynne (a little beat up from a backyard football game) finished a few spots behind Bloomie with a 22:14, while MHSCC mom Kim Short cruised to her career-best 27:45 with a little pace help from MHSCCer Mallory Littleton (28:14). Seventh-grader Ryan Christie donned his Buccaneer jacket with pride surging to a trophy finish with a 25:34. Maybe we'll see him donning the MHSCC threads in a couple years. Great work! Plenty of local runners made the run, including CC alum mom Kathy Kunkle, Milford rez Gifford King, and a group of CR and Lake runners. Race wins went to Leslie Wright (17:30) and Angie Brown (21:05).

CHAD, AMY MAKE SECOND-TEAM ALL-STATE

Posted by Czar Bloom at Nov 12, 2001 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
Junior Chad Carpenter and sophomore Amy Mallamo earned second-team All-state honors for their great cross country seasons. They become the sixth and seventh runners ever to achieve the feat at MHS. Chad placed 7th overall in the Division II state meet, becoming the third MHS runner ever to break into the 16s on a 5K course while Amy took 5th in her race, running a 20:32. Earlier in the season, she became just the third MHS female ever to break 21 on a 5K course. MHS also had a male and female make All-state in 1996 when Melody Rudd and Ethan Southard accomplished the feat. Former MHS runners Chris Ayres, Billy Haines and Jessi Rivera also made the All-state team during their careers.

The Bucs capped their season in style Saturday at the state cross country championships at Bellevue State Park as the boys finished 6th and the girls 9th out of 22 teams. Individually, Chad Carpenter and Amy Mallamo each made the state's Top 15 fastest runners to guarantee themselves All-state recognition. They become only the 6th and 7th runners ever to accomplish that feat at MHS. Chad ran a career-best 16:58 to place 7th in the boys Division II race, while Mallamo ran a 20:32 to place 5th in her race. Senior captain Brigid O'Neill ran a 25:58 to end her career with a personal best, while senior Brandon Miller ran a season-best 18:36 in his final race. Boys co-captain Scott Hall and Amber Zedney each ran career-bests, while Megan Pastor added a season-best. Lindsay Kenton, Kourtney Short, Jessica Fitzpatrick, Keith Short, Stuart Barr, Justin Bloom and Joey Palumbo each ran well to round out Milford's varsity finishers.
