BUCS BATTLE TO BESTS AT BRANDYWINE CREEK

Liz Butterly placed 11th overall in the varsity girls C race to help pace the cross country teams at Brandywine Creek State Park Saturday. Overall, 17 of 21 boys and five of eight girls ran their best Brandywine times. For complete MHSCC results and more pix, click on the headline or pictures. Liz Butterly took second overall with a 20:26 and Patrick Helmick ran an 18:53 to pace the girls and boys, respectively, at the Tidewater Classic in Salisbury Wednesday. The girls finished fourth out of 25 teams -- just 3 points from a third-place trophy, while the boys finished a solid ninth out of 25 teams. Brandon Morris ran a career-best 19:03 to reach the Bloom Top 10 for juniors, while Robert Fisher and Garrett Jenkins added career-best times. Kyle FitzPatrick, Matt Esposito, Alan Lane and James Starnes added season-best times. For the girls, Kim Baldwin, Shayla Wilson, Jessica Griffith and Sarah Murphy added career-best times, while Becky Godwin, Becky and Erin Clendaniel and Casey Johnson scored season-best times. BOYS, GIRLS SWEEP AWAY SEAFORD, POLY

Patrick Helmick, Brandon Morris, George Kershaw, Erick Cisneros, Jordan Showell and Travis White all ran in the 19s to spark two wins for the boys cross country team, a 27-32 upset of Seaford and a 18-45 win over Polytech Wednesday at Chapel Branch. Liz Butterly led the way for the girls as they improved to 4-1 on the season with a pair of wins as well. Helmick's time is the fourth fastest over the past 10 seasons for an MHS freshman, while Jordan Lane moved into the 10th spot on that list with a 21:06. Michael Schlegel rounded out the varsity with a career-best time, while Greg Horton, Lane, Dom Cartwright, Devon Schlegel, Doug McKnight and Chris Pink each added career times. GIRLS TOP TECH, SLIP TO DOVER

Liz Butterly, Kim Baldwin, Abby Mitchell, Becky Godwin and Jackie Creasey all finished ahead of Tech's No. 2 runner en route to a strong 19-39 win Wednesday at Schutte Park. Unfortunately, Dover proved a tad too tough and handed the Bucs their first loss of the season, 21-36. Shayla Wilson and Giulia Santandrea rounded out the varsity finishers. For the boys, Patrick Helmick led the way, followed closely by Erick Cisneros and Brandon Morris. George Kershaw, Jordan Showell, Michael Schlegel and Anthony Kramlich closed out the varsity. BUCS SLOSH THROUGH RAINY LAKE INV.

Elizabeth Butterly ran 15th to earn a medal in the Varsity B girls race, while Patrick Helmick ran a career-best 19:33 to highlight a wet day for the MHSCCers in the Lake Forest Invitational at Killens Pond Saturday. Brandon Morris, George Kershaw, Robert Fisher and Travis White each added season-best times for the boys varsity, while Kyle FitzPatrick also broke into the varsity with a stellar improvement. Cory Cates, Garrett Jenkins, Clarence Cartwright and Devon Schlegel ran career-best times, while James Starnes, Logan Moreau, Morgan Sleva and Kyle Berry added season-best times. For the girls, Giulia Santandrea shattered a career-best to claim her first varsity finish, while Miriam Millard added a career-best. Official times to be posted Sunday morning.
