BUCS STUMBLE TO CR IN HENLOPEN OPENER

Patrick Helmick and Liz Butterly led the way for the Bucs who fell to the CR boys, 19-44, and CR girls, 24-33 in the 2007 Henlopen opener at Brecknock Park Wednesday.

 Erick Cisneros, Dom Cartwright, Jordan Lane, George Kershaw, Robert Fisher and Travis White rounded out the varsity boys, while Abby Mitchell, Shayla Wilson, Alex Butterly, Becky Godwin, Alicia Sanchez and Becky Clendaniel reached the top 7 for the girls.

Patrick Helmick ran a 17:37 -- the 10th-fastest MHS 5K time in school history -- to win the Ron Powell Invitational Saturday at St. Joseph's School in Clayton. Meanwhile, Liz Butterly finished runner-up in the girls race with a stellar 20:34 to help the girls score a third-place trophy.

 Other MHSCC medal winners included Erick Cisneros, Jordan Lane, George Kershaw, Travis White, Abby Mitchell, Shayla Wilson, Alex Butterly and Becky Godwin.

 Robert Fisher, Kyle FitzPatrick, Jessica Griffith and Becky Clendaniel scored solid days to reach the varsity seven.

BUCS WRAP UP FINE SEASON IN STATES AT KILLENS

Liz Butterly finished 18th overall, while Patrick Helmick ran in the 18s to pace the boys and girls at a hot day in the Division II state cross country championships Saturday at Killens Pond. The girls finished 10th as a squad, while the boys finished 14th. Giulia Santandrea ran a career-best time of 24:10, while Abby Mitchell, Kim Baldwin, Shayla Wilson, Jackie Creasey and Becky Godwin rounded out the varsity. For the boys, George Kershaw, Travis White, Erick Cisneros, Dom Cartwright, Brandon Morris and Matt Esposito put together a solid varsity pack. Junior Liz Butterly (first team) and freshmen Kim Baldwin (second team), Abby Mitchell (second team) and Patrick Helmick (honorable mention) highlighted a fine day for the cross country teams at the Henlopen Conference Championship Saturday at Killens Pond. Helmick ran a stunning 17:53 to place 16th overall in the conference and reach the top spot of the Bloom Top freshmen list, while Baldwin's 21:22 tied Mitchell for No. 6 on the MHS All-time Fastest 5K list. Overall, the girls finished fourth out of 10 teams with just 23 points separating the top four squads. The boys finished seventh. Besides Helmick, George Kershaw, Brandon Morris, Erick Cisneros and Dom Cartwright ran career-best times to make the varsity, while Travis White and Matt Esposito also reached the 19s to round out the top 7 for the boys. Jackie Creasey and Becky Godwin ran season-best times, while Giulia Santandrea ran a career time to make the varsity for the girls, and Shayla Wilson rounded out the top 7. In the junior varsity races, Jordan Lane and Robert Fisher each ran in the 19s to earn top 10 medals, while Jessica Griffith, Becky Clendaniel, Erin Clendaniel and Emmery Williams improved their best times to score Top 10 medals as well. Other career-best times went to Garrett Jenkins, Cory Cates, Greg Horton, Morgan Sleva, Devon Schlegel, Andrew Whitehead and Dan Wheeler. Overall, 24 of 37 Bucs ran their best time ever at Killens.
