By JOE TORNEO, Staff Writer April 03, 2003 BERLIN -- John Russo and Eric McCurdy of Berlin High School won individual state championships in February, but they weren’t the only state champs from the town. Mason Powers and Jeremy Eliades also won state titles. Why haven’t you heard of them? Because they are young, very young. Powers is 9 and Eliades is 5 and both participate in the Berlin Youth Wrestling program. The program, sponsored by the Berlin Parks and Recreation Department, was started 10 years ago and has become a big hit in Berlin, a town that loves its wrestling. The team, coached by Roger Moss, has 35 wrestlers from kindergarten to seventh grade weighing 40 to 110 pounds. The "Minutemen" finished the season at 10-1 and had a great showing at the state tournament, held at Jonathan Law High School in Milford. Powers, an 80-pound dynamo, easily won his second state title, finishing the tournament season undefeated, and is already being touted as a future star at Berlin High. Eliades, just 51 pounds, surprised everyone by winning the Mighty Mite Division. Tyler Cunningham (70 lbs.), Anthony Zovich (45 lbs.), and Sean Pentalow (55 lbs.) each won third-place medals while Jacob Eliades (58 lbs.) finished forth in his division. Everyone has heard of Little League Baseball, youth soccer, and midget football, but youth wrestling isn’t something you hear about everyday. It is, however, quite popular and you’ll find kids administering headlocks all over the country. The Minutemen faced eight state opponents during the 2003 campaign and travel to Maine this weekend for a season-ending invitation featuring some of the best young wrestlers in New England. "The last tournament we went to had over 600 kids involved,"said Lou Eliades, assistant coach and father of Jeremy and Jacob. Many parents feel wrestling is too rough for kids in elementary school, but Moss and Eliades point out no team member was injured during the season. "It’s a safe sport, a lot of parents feel it’s a brutal sport, which it’s not," said Eliades, a former Berlin High School wrestler."There’s more children getting hurt playing soccer." Basically, the coaches, all certified by USA Wrestling, want the kids to learn wrestling fundamentals and to simply have fun. Jim Day, Berlin High School wrestling coach and Director of Athletics, is thrilled to see so many children interested in wrestling and likes the direction Moss is taking the program. "I’ve been working for two decades to put the youth program in the hands of someone that can take it to the next level," said Day, who won his ninth state championship earlier this year. "Roger Moss and the other coaches involved, committed to the youth program as they are, definitely are going to reflect the nature of our program." With the help of the Minutemen, Day will surely add to those nine state titles.
