Southington Kids Folkstyle Wrestling Tournament

Sunday, January 4, 2004 It was an exciting day for the Berlin Minutemen as 17 members traveled to Southington High School for Sharkfest 2004. The day was highlighted with a third place finish by Sheri Silvia. This was Sheri's first tournament and she pinned an opponent on her way to third place. Other place finisher's included: 1st Place finishes by Ricky Mullins, Anthony Zovich, and Brendan Butler 2nd Place finishes by Jack Banks, Ryan Butler and Andrew Zovich 3rd Place Finishes by Sean Pentalow, Matthew Cote and Sheri Silvia. In the Middle School Division the following Berlin Middle Schooler's Competed: Kevin Moss - 2nd place, Brandon Solek 3rd Place, Ryan DeGroff 3rd place, Jonathan Fiorillo 1st place, Cameron Banks 2nd place, Jack Rudy 2nd place and Matt DelConte 3rd Place.

Bristol Kids Folkstyle Tournament

Sunday, December 28, 2003. In the first tournament of the season the Berlin Minutemen entered 10 wrestlers and all finished in the top two places in their respective divisions. Andrew Zovich wrestling in the Mighty Mites Division and his first tournament won all three of his matches to win 1st place. Placing first in the Bantam Division were Matthew Cote and Brendan Butler both with two pins. Placing 2nd were Colin Cunningham and Jeremy Eliades. In the Midget Division Ryan Butler went 4-0 with three pins taking home the gold while Tyler Cunningham, Jacob Eliades and Anthony Zovich brought home silver. In the Novice Division Mason Powers had his hands full with Kyle Copes of Cheshire losing by Tech Fall. Mason had five matches on the day with two pins. The Minutemen will be traveling to Southington on January 4th for their next tournament. Anyone still interested in wrestling should contact Coach Roger Moss at 828-9818.image

2003 Berlin Invitational Results

Dan Madey won both outstanding wrestler and fastest fall in leading his Berlin team to the win in the Berlin Invitational. Madey earned four pins in 3:24 in winning the 135-pound class with a 51-second pin of Ridgefield’s Brendan Cleary. Berlin finished with 199.5 points, besting Avon’s 156. Locust Valley (N.Y.) was third (132.5) followed by Hand (122), Ridgefield (106), Maloney (91), Xavier (89.5), Bulkeley (70), Staples (67), Vinal Tech (58), Norwalk (48) and Masuk (34.5). Berlin’s Nick Catalano was a 2-1 winner in overtime over Ben Radzunas in the 152 final for the only other Redcoat winner. The team did have several other fine performances, including Jim Solek, who reached the 160-pound final before losing to Ridgefield’s Andrew Murphy by pin in 2:46. Also, Eric McCurdy finished second at 171 pounds, losing 6-3 to Ridgefield’s Eric Sellers and Chuck Desrochers advanced to the 189 final, but dropped a 13-4 decision to Masuk’s Nick Provenzano. Mike Crowe also reached a final, but an 11-9 setback to Ridgefield’s Luke Raithel in the 119-final resulted in a second. Bryan Wasik finished second in the 98-pound division and Shane Day was a third-place finisher at 125 pounds. Both are freshman and former Minutemen! Way to go!!!!!

Berlin Defeats Rocky Hill in 2003-04 Opener

Berlin 54, Rocky Hill 21: Berlin received five victories via pins and four more from forfeits in defeating Rocky Hill. Mike Crowe (119), Dan Madey (135), Dave Fiorillo (140), Jim Suleki (160) and Chuck Desrochers (189) all won on pin for the Redcoats. Rocky Hill picked up a pin at 275 by Corey Brummer and at 112 by Roop Sighn and decisions at 171 by Mo Osmon, at 152 by A.J. Maselli and at 103 by Kevin O’Leary
