Tournament Format: This is a Takedown Tournament, with two divisions Beginner and Advanced. Here's how it works - Four to Five wrestlers per bracket -- Brackets are set up by age/weight/division. Winners are determined by best of five takedowns. (First to win three takedowns wins the bout.) Stalling and penalty points apply as well. After three minutes if there is no winner we go into a one-minute overtime period. If after one minute there is still no winner, then the ref decides on aggression, with warnings for stalling and number of serious attempts at a takedown counting heavily in the decision. Note-in the four years we've been running this tournament, this format has worked well, and overtime decisions are few and very far between. At the end of each division session we line up all the wrestlers and we play "King of the Hill". Just like practice, we go by size upwards. One takedown wins it and the winner stays in until he is beat. Awards are given for the "Longest Reign" (Most wins before losing) and the "Last One Standing." We did this the last four years and the kids LOVE it! IMPORTANT==> Also, since the main goal of the tournament is to promote wrestling in the area, we have a NOVICE class Signifying "beginner" not the age category). All wrestlers with less then two years experience(they wrestled last year for the first time) compete in their own brackets. (And their own King of the Hill). Any wrestler who has won a medal in a non-novice tournament cannot be considered a novice. This division is strictly for beginner wrestlers.
