Halloween Choices

by Charles Stuart PlatkinAccording to The National Confectioners Association, more than 93 percent of children go trick-or-treating each year, and of those, 84 percent ranked candy and gum as their top picks. But it's not just kids. Ninety percent of parents admit to sneaking goodies from their kids' trick-or-treat bags. Don't worry, I'm not going to take the fun out of one of the great treat holidays of all time. While I do believe that small things make a difference and I strongly advocate dietary consistency for long-term weight control success (no one-day breaks), I'm still not going to spoil anything. However, I do have a few better choices to share. CANDY CORN VERSUS MINI CHOCOLATE CANDYBased simply on calories and fat, candy corn is the better bet. Because it’s so sweet, it’s hard to eat more than a couple 1-ounce packages (220 calories for two packages) and it’s virtually fat free. You can eat a lot of chocolate very quickly, and each one of those mini candy bars has about 45 to 80 calories. And although chocolate has more saturated fat, on the positive side it also has some antioxidants and calcium (keep in mind it is still not a health food). So choose the chocolate minis -- but only two or three. Reese’s minis (five pieces): 210 calories (about 45 calories for one) Mini crunch bars (one bar): 50 calories, 2.5g fat, 7g carbs Mini mix (five bite-size pieces, including Snickers, Milky Way, 3 Musketeers and Twix): 200 calories, 9g fat, 29g carbs Mini Kit Kat (three pieces): 220 calories, 11g fat, 27g carbs Fit Tip: If you want a chocolate taste with fewer calories, opt for mini York Peppermint Patties -- only 50 calories and 1 gram of fat for more than a half-ounce portion. PUMPKIN SEEDS VERSUS GUMMY BEARS Gummy bears have fewer calories -- 140 for 16 bears (1.5 ounces) -- and because they’re so chewy and sticky, you may eat a lot less. But they offer no nutritional value, whereas pumpkin seeds are loaded with nutrients such as protein, healthy fat, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous and other minerals. Unfortunately, they also pack on the calories: 180 to 200 for a quarter cup. I’d still vote for them, but be sure to watch how many you eat. CHOCOLATE-COVERED RAISINS VERSUS HERSHEY'S KISSESThe key here is knowing how many it's going to take to satisfy your chocolate craving. If you have six Hershey's Kisses (25 calories each) that’s 150 calories, whereas 1 ounce of chocolate-covered raisins has about 120 calories -- not too bad if you buy 1-ounce bags -- plus you get the health benefits of the raisins. And, if you eat them one at a time they’ll last longer then a few Kisses. Fit Tip: Why not have plain old raisins? They have iron, potassium and fiber, are low in sodium, fat free and loaded with antioxidants. While not a calorie bargain, they’re still healthier than either of the above. A very small box (1/2 ounce) can pack 45 calories -- about one calorie per raisin. Hershey's Kiss: 25 calories, 1.5g fat, 2g carbs Raisins (1/4 cup or one box): 130 calories, 0g fat, 31g carbsRaisinets (three mini bags): 200 calories, 8g fat, 34g carbsRICE KRISPIES TREATS VERSUS HALLOWEEN SUGAR COOKIESIt’s a pretty close call: Rice Krispies Treats (90 calories, 2g fat, 18g carbs) are 10 calories less than a 1-ounce cookie (100 calories, 6g fat, 12g carbs). They’re also lower in fat and individually wrapped to help control overeating, all of which make them the better option. Not only that, but how many of us can really eat just one cookie? Fit Tip: For a cookie-like taste with fewer calories, try Miss Meringue. I’m a big fan of the chocolate raspberry flavor -- only 80 calories for 13 cookies.SMARTIES VERSUS SKITTLESSmarties, like their name, are the smarter choice. You can have two rolls of Smarties (total: 30 tablets) for just 50 calories. Skittles, on the other hand, have 170 calories per 1.5-ounce bag. HALLOWEEN CUPCAKES VERSUS PUMPKIN PIE VERSUS HALLOWEEN CHOCOLATE-LAYER CAKELayer cake is by far the worst choice, at more than 400 calories. The cupcake and the pumpkin pie are close when it comes to calories, but since portion sizes are usually bigger for pie, a cupcake is typically your better bet. Definitely skip the whipped cream if you choose pumpkin pie -- it adds 80 to 100 calories per serving. Oh, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream to make it "a la mode" tacks on another 270 calories.  Entenmann's Halloween cupcake: 290 calories, 14g fat, 40g carbs Entenmann's pumpkin pie (one slice -- one-fifth of the pie, 120 grams): 300 calories, 13g fat, 41g carbs  Halloween Chocolate-Layer Cake (one-twelfth of the cake, 115 grams): 410 calories, 21g fat, 56 carbsAPPLE VERSUS CANDY APPLEOK, this is a giveaway, but the point is the huge difference in calories: 60 to 80 for a plain old apple, compared with 330 calories or more for a candy apple. TOOTSIE ROLL VERSUS TOOTSIE POPTootsie Pops -- about 60 calories each -- last a lot longer than a single Tootsie Roll Midgee, which is about 25 calories. HALLOWEEN TIPSPerhaps you went overboard last Halloween, and it spiraled into a Thanksgiving feeding frenzy that became a Christmas binge, which turned into a 5-pound weight-gain -- sound familiar? Well, this year will be different. Here are a few unusual and not-so-unusual tactics for treating your friends, foes and family instead of treating yourself.  Not-So-SeriousTake revenge. Bring a goody bag to your friend from cardio class (with a weakness for chocolate) who won't stop bragging about her recent weight loss.Torment your siblings (especially if they were mean to you when you were growing up) by giving their children a little “extra energy.” Provide copious amounts of candy to your nieces and nephews and watch them bounce off the walls. Redistribute your extra candy to your co-workers, especially the ones you don’t like. You'll earn brownie points when the 3 p.m. munchies set in, and they’ll gain the weight, not you.Reminisce. Send your old college roommate who never gained the “Freshman 15”a care package.Drive the teacher nuts. Give candy to your friend who teaches fourth grade to hand out as prizes for spelling bees or math contests, and let him deal with kids on a major sugar jag.Be a philanthropist. Drop it off at the local YMCA or children's shelter.Serious TipsKeep it high: Place the candy for trick-or-treaters upstairs so you have to run up and down the stairs to get it -- do this 10 times and you've burned about 68 calories.Walk it off: Take your children trick-or-treating and keep up with them! Three hours can burn 300 to 500 calories.Don’t go far out: Don't buy Halloween candy too far in advance; you'll have less time to eat it!Don’t enjoy: When buying candy for trick-or-treaters, choose kinds you don’t really like.Work it: Make your child's costumes. Sewing burns about 100 calories per hour.Get full: Have a satisfying and nutritious lunch or dinner before trick-or-treating -- you'll be less likely to pick at the candy bag if you're full!Keep it at 100: Today there are a number of 100-calorie snack packages that are perfect for Halloween. They include: Planters Peanut Butter Crisps, Oreos, Chips Ahoy, Pringles, Cheese Nips, Wheat Thins and Jolly Time Healthy Pop popcorn. image

Mid-State Wrestling League

Berlin Youth Wrestling Objectives and Goals

The Objectives of the Berlin Wrestling Club, Inc (BWC) are

1.    To promote wrestling at all levels.
2.    Ensure the continuation of, and improvement upon opportunities for safe competition with maximum exposure to various styles of wrestling.

It is the intent of the Berlin Wrestling Club, Inc (BWC) to meet these objectives by creating opportunities in wrestling for competitors of all ages and, along with their coaches, parents, and fans, encourage their continued participation in the sport of wrestling as they advance through their lives. The control and direction of the Berlin Youth Wrestling, Inc (BYW) shall be placed in the hands of those individuals who are now working with Berlin’s wrestlers.   The Goals of the Berlin Youth Wrestling, Inc (BYW) shall include,  1.     The development of responsible wrestling administrators from the ranks of the Berlin wrestling program at the local club level who will provide leadership and direction to its membership. 2.    To develop an attitude of sincere concern among all coaches and wrestlers towards the improvement of all levels and aspects of wrestling from elementary through high school levels of competition.

3.    To provide channels of communication within Berlin and with the various other Communities, furthering the exchange of ideas and experience to the benefit of all wrestlers.

4.    To develop an attitude of unity within the Town of Berlin towards program development and achievement. 5.    To increase the positive attitudes of educators, wrestlers and the general public toward the art and science of wrestling.

6.    To host two folk style tournaments a year as a fundraiser for the club.

7.     To offer two college scholarships to a graduating seniors who have been involved in the BYW program and participated on the High School team.

8.    To provide a system for democratic representation of all competitors, coaches and concerned people in local, state and national organizations and activities dedicated to the sport of wrestling.

9.    To establish patterns of organization and objectives within the Town of Berlin, providing continuity of effort as wrestlers and coaches step forward from the elementary level to the most advance and successful endeavors for which they may strive.

Eleven Berlin Minutemen competed in the USAWCT State Tournament this year.  They were able to crown on champion as Nick Zuk placed first in the Intermediate Division at the 110 lb weight class.

Also wrestling were the following with their results:

Intermediate division had two Minutemen in the 61 lb class as Isaac Myers won his first match before losing in the quarterfinals 1-0.   Josh Veleas won his first match 9-4 then lost in the quarterfinals but then pinning his next opponent and beating Chris Cozen from Ridgfield 4-2.  Josh then lost to eventual 3rd place finisher  Jadan Canada 13-8 to finish in 6th place.

Joseph Pettinelli in his second year of wrestling competed in the 76 lb. Weight class.  Joe who his first match  2-0 over Thomas McBride before losing to Devon Schoenberger. He then pinned his next opponent before losing 8-4 to third place finisher  Jake Holland.

Michael Patterson at 86lb.s was in a six man bracket where he won two matches by pin and one by major decision to finish third.

Nick Zuk made short work of Michael Quesnel of Ledyard pinning him in 42 seconds and then winning two decisions on his way to his second State title.

 

In the Novice Division Anthony Myers wrestled at 71 lbs. in a tough bracket.  Anthony dropped his first match 4-1 won his next match 22-7 before losing again 4-1 out of medal contention.

Sean Sullivan at 90 lb lost a tough first match 7-5 and then reeled off two wins before losing to Alex Jaromek of Stamford.

Wrestling in his second year Jared Zima had two tough matches but was able to experience the state tournament.

The Middle School Division started with Matt Cote at 91 lb where he lost his first match pinned his second opponent and then won by injury default before losing 4-1 to Steve Beckham from Danbury.

Richie Schlitching at 98 lb started with eventual runner-up Sam Odell.  He then pinned Caile Johnson of Ledyard before losing to 3rd place finisher Zach Tepper 11-2.

The Minutemen’s final competitor was Ricky Mullins who had been fighting a cold all week and had dropped 14 lbs from the 128 lb weight class he was entered in.  Ricky lost his first match and then reeled off two wins with a nail biter 9-8 decision and 3-1 decision.  As fatigue set in he couldn’t muster enough to beat eventual 3rd place finisher Tyler Courter losing 11-7.

New England Tournament at Hillhouse

If you want to see the best in high school wrestling you don't have to go far this year.  The New England Tournament will be held March 6 and 7 at Hillhouse High School in New Haven.  Berlin's lone representative, Kevin Moss will be competing in the 135 lb bracket.  Wrestling starts Friday at 5 PM while Kevin's first match will be after 6:45 PM.  Wrestling starts on Saturday at 9 AM and depending on how Kevin does Friday night will determine when he wrestles on Saturday.

 

His first match will be against Rhode Island runner-up Jordan Leveille. Come cheer him on and see some great wrestling action.
