2012 MIGHTY MITE & BANTAM State Championship Results

Four Mighty Mite and seven Bantam Minutemen traveled to Bristol Eastern with hopes of bringing home a State Title.  Only one was able to capture that as Cayden Hill won his weight class with two pins and a technical fall in his second year of wrestling.  Brother Mason placed third in only his first year while teammate Matt Koops took fourth in the same bracket.  Michael Litke of Glastonbury placed fourth in his weight class.  Coach Roger Moss said, "I was really happy with the way these four young wrestlers competed today."  "They showed great progress from the beginning of the year and I am proud of everyone one of them."

I the next age group the Bantams, Braden Shea was in a bracket with two other teammates and after winning his first match 6-1 lost to eventual the champion.  Not to be discouraged Braden went on to win three matches the final an overtime pin to place second.  Rory Mayer lost his first match but then rallied for two wins by pin before dropping a 7-3 decision in the consolation finals.  The match was 5-3 going into the final period and Rory was looking for a takedown to tie things up but missed his move and was taken down for the final score.  Coach Moss had this to say, "Rory was struggling in the middle of the season and we were worried he might not finish out the season.  I hope this finish will  motivate him to keep going and get better next year.  He really has come a long way this year."

Also wrestling in the Bantam division but not placing were Isaac Cortes, Nicholas Koops, Zachary Skinner, Caleb Orde and Marcus Kelly-Johnson.

2012 Intermediate, Novice & Middle School Results

On Sunday, February 26, 2012 eleven Minutemen traveled to Hillhouse High School in New Haven with visions of a state title in their minds.  Four would make it to the finals only to come away a runner-up in the highly competitive tournament putting the best from four qualifiers on the mat.  Placing second in the Intermediate Division was Vinny DeFrancesco, Novice Division was Joshua Veleas and JP Gorneault and Middle School Division Seth Pelletier.In the Middle School Division Jared Zima placed 4th and Marcus Alleyne 5th at 152 lbs.  Wrestling tough on the day but finishing out of the top six were; Nicholas Arborio, Serge Duquette, Michael Patterson, Daniel Veleas and Elijah Watson.Two weeks later Vinny DeFrancesco traveled to Cranston RI to wrestle in the New England Tournament where he placed 4th.Coach Moss wanted to thank this year's volunteer coaches for their work with the team.  This group included; Mark Mangiafico, Fred Orde, Mike Litke, Pete Hanson, Pete Veleas and Phil Gorneault.

Waterford Youth Wrestling TournamentPlease note Location****New London High School****490 Jefferson Ave • New London, CT 06320January 29, 2012ALL WRESTLERS WITH BRACES ON THEIR TEETH MUST HAVE PROTECTIVE MOUTH GUARDSAll wrestlers will be grouped by both age category and weight into 4-man brackets. Each wrestler will wrestle one-another giving each wrestler a total of 3 matches (round-robin format). There are many advantages to doing this. Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place wrestlers.

Turn left at the end of the exit ramp onto Route 85 (which is Broad Street). Proceed to the second traffic light (approximately ½ mile). Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and travel approximately ½ mile (you will be between 2 cemeteries) to the next traffic light. New London High School is just ahead on the right. Traveling South on Route 395:Take exit 77. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp onto Route 85 (which is Broad Street). Follow Route 85 (Broad Street) past the Crystal Mall for approximately 2 ½ miles to the intersection of Broad Street and Jefferson Avenue. Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and travel approximately ½ mile (you will be between two cemeteries) to the next traffic light. New London High School is just ahead on the right. Traveling South from Hartford area on Route 2:

Follow Route 2 to Route 11. At the end of Route 11, turn left and continue to the light at Route 85 (at Salem Four Corners). Turn right onto Route 85 and continue for approximately 9 miles. You will go by the Crystal Mall and pass under I-95 to the intersection of Broad Street and Jefferson Avenue. Turn right onto Jefferson Avenue and travel approximately ½ mile (you will be between 2 cemeteries) to the next traffic light. New London High School is just ahead on the right.

Somers Tournament Results January 22, 2012

A group travelled to Somers High School for a tournament with the following results:  Braden Shea took 1st place with three pins, JP Gorneault         in the Novice Division took3rd place.  In the afternoon Middle School Division 1st place finishes were won by Jared Zima and Seth Pelletier, 2nd place by Michael Patterson and 3rd place finish by Marcus Alleyne.

Southington High School720 Pleasant StreetSouthington, Ct. 06489Sunday January 29th, 2012 Qualifications for wrestlers to participate in Beginner’s tournaments are: Must be a first year wrestler or have two or more years of experience in which the wrestler has not won a medal in a regular tournament, in which the brackets were greater than three wrestlers, in the current or prior year(s). A wrestler that has two or more years of tournament experience and has also won two Beginners tournaments in the same year or a prior year, then that wrestler is not eligible to wrestle in subsequent beginner’s tournaments.
