After squandering a two-possession lead late in the fourth quarter at Waldron, Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris called timeout and issued a challenge to her team.

Play together, be smart and finish off the Lady Mohawks was the message.

Chelsey Skipton hit six straight free throws over the final 65 seconds to lift Shelbyville to a 55-51 victory. The win improved Shelbyville to 4-7 this season with three wins coming over Shelby County opponents.

"Waldron is a tough team," said Norris. "They have a stacked coaching staff that knows what they are talking about. They know the game of basketball and do a very good job of getting their team ready for every game.

"Their whole team is solid so this is a good win for us. It's a good motivational step especially with the Shelby Shootout coming up next. Last year we were on a downward spiral going into that so hopefully were on the way up right now."

The Lady Golden Bears got a big boost from the return of freshman guard Riley Achenbach, who hit four 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 12 points. Achenbach missed the last five games after suffering a concussion on Nov. 26 at Pendleton Heights.

"Achenbach is a nice addition," said Norris. "We kept saying, 'Wait until we get Riley back.' She presents an offensive threat."

Mary Laird led Waldron (6-4) with 13 points, and Kylee Gibbs finished with 12 points and six rebounds. But the Lady Mohawks have struggled since its overtime win at Jac-Cen-Del on Dec. 7.

"We're going through a stretch right now where we don't have all five players on the floor into it," said Waldron coach Brad Gossett. "At any given time we have three people doing the bulk of the work and we have to get away from that. We're not playing team basketball.

"For the most part we did a lot better. We're still not up to our potential."

With Laird hitting three 3s in the first quarter, Shelbyville had to battle to keep from getting knocked out early. Waldron's seven-point lead at the end of the first quarter carried over for 2-1/2 minutes into the second before a 6-0 run sparked the Lady Golden Bears.

Waldron held off that charge and took a 32-27 lead into halftime. Gibbs scored in the low post to start the third quarter and the Lady Mohawks were again ahead by seven.

Eryn Hopper answered on the other end for Shelbyville which started a 10-0 run that included two 3s by Achenbach. The Lady Golden Bears never trailed again after its best eight-minute span of the season.

The game was tied six times over the final 12 minutes but Waldron couldn't regain control of the game.

A long jump shot from Hopper followed by a Raven Hibbard 3-pointer gave Shelbyville a 48-43 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Less than 90 seconds later, Gibbs hit a free throw and Brittany Elliott bombed a 3-pointer. And after another wasted Shelbyville possession that resulted in Elliott racing the other way and getting fouled at the basket, Norris put the hammer down on her team.

Elliott eventually missed both free throws while Skipton calmly sank six-in-a-row to secure a much-needed road win.

Skipton finished with 11 points and four rebounds. Hopper and Caitlin Mills each had eight points. Ashley Bush had six points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Elliott scored eight points and dished out six assists for Waldron. Vanessa Higdon had seven points and seven rebounds. Callie Ramey added seven points off the bench.

Shelbyville's junior varsity squad ended a four-game losing streak with a 28-20 win over Waldron.

Allison Gobel and Taylor Pierce each had nine points for Shelbyville (6-4). Meghan Thornburg finished with seven points.

Shawna Jackson led Waldron (4-3) with seven points.

MORRISTOWN — For three quarters, the Morristown High School girls’ basketball team gave visiting Shelbyville all it wanted.

And then, the fourth quarter hit.

Clinging to a 35-31 advantage, the Lady Golden Bears built an eight-point lead before slamming the door on any hope the Lady Yellow Jackets may have had, running away with a 53-39 road win. With the victory, Shelbyville improves to 3-7, while Morristown falls to 1-7.

“I told the girls we would be .500 if we only get to play three quarters. We fall apart in the fourth quarter, and we have to do a better job preparing for the fourth. I really liked our chances at the half,” Morristown first-year head coach Mike Smith said.

After being on a cold spell lately, Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris was pleased to get a win.

“It’s a win, and we needed it. This was a much needed win. We are still in the process of trying to learn what our game is. Even when you come in expected to win, you can’t take Morristown for granted. They competed, and at times were a little better than we were. This time last year, we only had one win, and I definitely think the hard work we have put in is starting to pay off,” Norris said.

The game matched the frigid temperatures outside the Bee Hive, as both teams combined for 33-of-99 shooting from the field and 36 turnovers.

After finding themselves deadlocked at 22-22 with Morristown, Shelbyville turned to Ashley Bush and Allison Gobel in the third quarter to get the offense going.

Bush connected on a jumper midway through the quarter, giving Shelbyville a 24-22 advantage it would not relinquish.

Gobel, who scored six points in the contest, extended the lead with a pair of free throws moments later. The Lady Yellow Jackets were able to cut the deficit to four following a 3-pointer by Kendall Redd.

Early on, it appeared as if the Lady Golden Bears would play the role of rude guests, racing out to a 7-0 lead and scoring on its first three possessions. Along the way, Morristown struggled with Shelbyville’s defensive press, turning the ball over twice and forcing Smith to call a quick timeout less than two minutes into the game.

Following the timeout, Morristown settled down, cutting the deficit to 8-7 following a basket by Macy Simrell with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Shelbyville would hold on, as Raven Hibbard’s basket gave the Lady Golden Bears a 10-7 lead to close out the quarter.

Both teams would continue trading baskets in the second quarter, as Shelbyville again raced out to a quick 12-7 lead only to see Morristown take a 13-12 lead on a basket by Simrell with 5:15 left in the half. Both teams would struggle down the stretch to gain the upper hand, resorting to the locker rooms tied 18-18.

“Halftime came at the perfect time. We were able to regroup. We ran well early on, and I think we got a little greedy. We knew Morristown would heat up, and they did. We had trouble being patient at times in the first half,” Norris said.

Caitlyn Mills led the way for Shelbyville, notching 12 points, while Chelsey Skipton chipped in with 11. The Lady Yellow Jackets were paced by Simrell and Kaylin Carlton, who each scored 10 in the loss.

The Lady Golden Bears snapped a six game losing streak at the Bee Hive Tuesday Night after defeating Morristown 53-39. The Bears was led in scoring by: Caitlin Mills 12, & Chelsey Skipton11. Midway through the fourth quarter Saturday night at William L. Garrett Gymnasium in Shelbyville, New Palestine had about all it could take from Shelbyville.

Nursing an 11-point lead, the Lady Dragons spread the floor and tried to run out the final four minutes. They had been banged around, harrassed and generally frustrated by the Lady Golden Bears.

The final result still netted New Palestine a 55-38 victory but nothing came easy in securing the program’s second Hoosier Heritage Conference win of the season.

“Even though we took the loss, we took pride in the fact that people know now who Shelbyville is,” said Golden Bears coach Amanda Norris. “We play hard to the very last buzzer. This was probably one of best games where we worked the entire game.”

Shelbyville shot just 26 percent from the field and that, in the end, provided the difference for a New Palestine squad that was only slightly better at 33 percent.

Shelbyville could sense New Palestine’s displeasure at having just a four-point lead at halftime but a 1-for-8 performance from the field in the third quarter allowed the Dragons some breathing room.

“We didn’t hit many shots in the third quarter but there was never a moment where I felt like we let up,” said Norris. “We had total effort from every one of the girls.”

Scoring runs of 6-0 and 9-0 allowed the Lady Dragons to build a 44-29 lead after three quarters.

Eryn Hopper cut the lead to 12 with a free throw and then a score in the low post nearly 30 seconds later to open the fourth quarter.

Suddenly it was New Palestine that was cold from the field. The Lady Dragons (3-2, 2-0 HHC) hit just 1 of 9 shots over the final eight minutes but hit 9 of 13 free-throws to keep the Lady Golden Bears (2-7, 0-4 HHC) from ever getting the lead under double digits.

Bethany Murrell, Hancock County’s leading scorer at 18 points per game, had just 14 points and eight rebounds in the win Saturday. Danielle Owens did more damage with 18 points and nine rebounds.

“We didn’t try to do anything special with regards to Bethany,” said Norris. “Owens hurt us a little bit. She got quite a few offensive boards. I haven’t seen her play that aggressively this season.”

Chelsey Skipton led Shelbyville with nine points and eight rebounds. Caitlin Mills finished with seven. Raven Hibbard had six points and six rebounds coming off the bench. Hopper also had six points in a game where eight different Golden Bears scored.

Shelbyville will try to break a six-game losing streak Tuesday at the Bee Hive in Morristown. There is no junior varsity game. Varsity tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the Lady Yellow Jackets (1-6).

New Palestine earned its second junior varsity win of the season with a 26-21 victory.

Ivey Spreen, Taylor Espich and Katie Morris each scored eight points for New Palestine (2-5).

Allison Gobel led Shelbyville (5-4) with five points.
