Proving it’s not how you start but how you finish, the Triton Central High School girls’ basketball team opened Tuesday’s clash at Shelbyville holding a slim 6-3 lead after the first quarter. When the dust settled, the Lady Tigers rolled to a 71-34 victory, erasing any memories of last week’s 57-35 loss to Mid-Hoosier Conference foe Indian Creek.

With the win, which snapped a two-game skid, Triton Central improves to 13-3 on the season, while the Lady Golden Bears dropped to 4-13 and find themselves in the midst of a six-game losing streak. The margin of victory was the second largest this season against Shelbyville.

”I told the girls before the game to take a lesson from the Indian Creek game. I thought we did a good job of rebounding and moving the ball better. The key is we played really well as a team. I can’t believe we scored six points in the first quarter and finished with 71,” Triton Central coach Bryan Graham said.

Neither team could find its way in the first quarter, combining for a 3-of-17 output from the field.

”Offensively, we struggled in the first quarter, but I was thrilled with our defense. I thought that was the difference between the first and second quarters, we had a defensive lapse. This is a loss that will resonate, and, hopefully, will fuel a fire for the rest of the season,” said Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris.

Triton Central put to rest any thoughts Shelbyville may have had of an upset in the second quarter, opening up a 23-7 lead thanks in part to four three-pointers from Gabrielle Duncan, who finished the game with 20 points. The Lady Tigers ended the quarter on a 7-0 run as Kelsay Schilling, Casey Stow and Duncan all scored to give Triton Central a 30-9 halftime edge.

”Coming into the game, especially on the road, you have to weather the storm. Now a lot of times, people think you mean weathering what the other team is doing, but we had to weather ourselves. We had to overcome not playing well, and I thought we did a great job with that,” Graham said.

The intermission did little to stop the Lady Tigers, who stretched the advantage to 42-10 midway through the third quarter following back-to-back baskets from Stow and Duncan. After going 10-of-12 from the field in the quarter, Triton Central found itself ahead 52-17 heading into the fourth quarter.

In addition to Duncan’s 20, Triton Central got 19 from Stow and 14 from Schilling. Shelbyville was led by Chelsey Skipton, who scored 11 in the loss.
