Chelsey Skipton scored a career-high 29 points and Ashley Bush had a double-double to lead the Shelbyville Golden Bears to an impressive 59-47 road win at Batesville Saturday.

Shelbyville outscored the hosts 22-10 in the second quarter to take control of the game.

"The second quarter has been a huge letdown for us this season... and if not the second then the third quarter. So we challenged the girls to come out with a different fire in the second quarter and not back down," said Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris. "Skipton was able to get to the basket, and when she gets to the basket that creates openings for everyone."

Skipton scored eight points in the second quarter and Raven Hibbard hit a pair of three-pointers to spark an offense that had struggled over the last three games.

"This was a much-needed win from the mental aspect," said Norris. "The girls have been working hard."

Skipton also had six rebounds, three assists and five steals. Through six games this season, the junior guard is averaging 16.8 points and seven rebounds per game for the Golden Bears (3-3), who are at .500 in the month of December for the first time since 2006.

Bush finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Hibbard had eight points and Riley Achenbach scored five.

Shelbyville lost the junior varsity game, 28-20. Allyson Conner led Shelbyville (2-4) with six points.

GREENFIELD — Chelsey Skipton’s shoulders are going to have to get a lot stronger if she is going to continue carrying the scoring burden for the Shelbyville Golden Bears.

The junior guard scored 21 points and had nine rebounds, but the rest of the Lady Golden Bears struggled in a 54-39 loss at Greenfield-Central Tuesday night.

Skipton was 7-of-17 from the field, but the rest of the team was just 7-of-29 (24 percent), and the collective group was 0-for-15 from the 3-point arc.

“We are having a heck of a time putting the ball in the hoop,” said Shelbyville girls’ basketball coach Amanda Norris. “It’s frustrating for Chelsey to feel like she is the only one looking to score right now. It’s obvious to us that she is working her butt off, but we’ve got to get her some support. We don’t want a situation where she feels like she has to go one-on-five. So we’re challenging the girls to see who will step up and score.”

Ashley Bush had five points and four rebounds in the first quarter but was quiet the rest of the game.

“Bush is having a hard time right now,” said Norris. “She’s going to get back into it any day now.”

Allison Gobel scored seven points in the second half, but was scoreless in the first because she picked up three quick fouls.

Raven Hibbard and Riley Achenbach were a combined 0-for-11 from the field.

“We’re just not taking smart shots and that’s why we’re not scoring,” said Norris.

Shelbyville played well early against a Greenfield-Central squad that started two sophomores and a freshman.

Skipton and Bush combined to score the Golden Bears’ first nine points, and Shelbyville held a 9-7 lead with 3:53 to go in the first quarter. Then the Cougars (3-3, 1-1 Hoosier Heritage Conference) got it rolling.

LaRae Cruz, Hancock County’s leading scorer last season, hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final 66 seconds to cap off an 11-2 run to the first break.

Cruz hit another 3 to open the second-quarter scoring and the Cougars kept putting points up on the scoreboard.

Shelbyville (2-3, 0-2 HHC) hit just 2-of-14 shots in the second quarter and missed all six 3-point attempts, while the Cougars were an efficient 6-of-8 from the field. That led to a 34-16 lead at halftime.

Greenfield-Central scored the first seven points of the third quarter to extend the lead to 41-16.

Cruz had just two points in the second half but still led the Cougars with 16 points and six steals. Shelby Oldham added 10 points and four assists. Katie Peters finished with nine points and four rebounds.

Greenfield-Central won the junior varsity game over Shelbyville, 30-26.

Taylor Pierce led the Golden Bears (2-3) with 11 points.

To take the next step back to competitiveness in the Hoosier Heritage Conference, Shelbyville needs to quit being its own worst enemy.

With the talent gap between the top HHC teams and the Golden Bears finally narrowing, the Lady Golden Bears need to step up their own execution. On Friday against visiting Pendleton Heights, Shelbyville committed seven first-quarter turnovers and hit just 2 of 10 shots from the field to fall behind by double digits.

Things only got mildly better from there.

Kenzie Gustin scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Lady Arabians to a 61-32 victory at William L. Garrett Gymnasium.

Pendleton Heights not only shot 43 percent from the field, but connected on 8 of 16 three-pointers to improve to 5-0 (2-0 HHC) this season. Shelbyville is now 2-2 (0-1 HHC), and has lost 27 straight conference games.

“It’s frustrating because we know we’re so much better than that,” said Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris after the loss. “We all know we’re capable of playing so much better.”

The Lady Arabians hit four 3s in the first quarter, including a pair by Quincey Gary and Tiffany Wertz in the final 80 seconds to establish a 17-5 lead at the first break.

Shelbyville worked its way to the free-throw line in the second quarter and that kept the deficit manageable. Riley Achenbach hit four free throws in the final 41 seconds after drawing fouls while aggressively driving to the basket.

Gustin followed with a drive and score just before the halftime buzzer to make it 35-19.

“We put together a pretty detailed scouting report. The games we scouted, I don’t think Pendleton Heights played as well as they did against us,” said Norris. “They ran extremely hard. They cut precisely. They’re execution was much better than in the game we saw. On the other hand, we didn’t do anything we wanted to do.”

Pendleton Heights hit three more 3s in the third quarter and outscored Shelbyville 13-6.

“I believe this is a defensive let down, not an offensive let down,” said Norris. “We have to play defense for our offense to go smoothly. When we don’t play defense, we try to play individual offense, and that’s not the way we’ll win games.”

Raven Hibbard hit a pair of 3s, and led Shelbyville in scoring with eight points. Chelsey Skipton and Ashley Bush each had six points. Achenbach and Allison Gobel finished with five points apiece.

Shelbyville was 9 of 34 from the field, including 2 of 14 from the 3-point arc.

Gary finished with 14 points for Pendleton Heights. Kelsey Hubble had 11 points and five rebounds.

With junior guard Megan Fix out with a concussion, Shelbyville’s junior varsity team utilized just five players over the final three quarters and overtime Friday against Pendleton Heights.

Achenbach played the first quarter of the JV game then stepped aside to let Megan Limecooly, Kay Brokering, Allyson Conner, Taylor Pierce and Kiersten Macklin finish the game. And they almost pulled out a win.

Morgan Hubble grabbed a rebound and scored just as time expired in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 29-29.

Sarah Dixon hit a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left in overtime to give Pendleton Heights a 34-31 victory.

Dixon had a game-high 14 points.

Pierce led Shelbyville (2-2) with 10 points. Brokering finished with nine.

“Our JV gave a great effort,” said Norris.
