The Shelbyville Lady Golden Bears’ quest to produce a .500 record this season veered off track Saturday afternoon at William L. Garrett Gymnasium.

Hauser’s Taylor Miller scored 30 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and had five steals in her team’s 61-53 win at Shelbyville.

Chelsey Skipton led Shelbyville with 14 points. Raven Hibbard and Ashley Bush each had 12, but the Lady Golden Bears found it difficult to get its offense in gear.

The loss drops the Lady Golden Bears to 6-8 this season with a tough six-game stretch that closes out the regular season on Jan. 31.

Shelbyville hit just 30 percent of a season-high 72 shot attempts, including 3-of-20 from the 3-point arc.

“Part of the problem with our team right now is we can’t decide the difference between a good shot and a bad shot,” said Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris. “I don’t know if it is lack of experience. I don’t know if it is lack of confidence. I don’t know if it’s fear. But we seem to shoot the ball as soon as we catch it whether we’re open or not.”

Despite the Lady Golden Bears insistence to settle for the first shot available, the Lady Jets (8-7) made just one of their first 11 shots and committed four turnovers. A 6-0 run to close out the first quarter gave Hauser a 10-7 lead.

Miller, a Ball State recruit, made a three-pointer and Claire Dodd, who finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, followed with an offensive rebound and score to give Hauser a 22-11 lead midway through the second quarter.

Shelbyville answered with a 7-0 run sparked by a Hibbard drive and score. Hauser got the lead back to 10, but an offensive putback by Bush just before the halftime horn made it 30-22 at the break.

Just 16 minutes into the game and the Lady Golden Bears already had 40 shot attempts from the field (1-of-12 from the 3-point line) – and just one attempt from the free-throw line.

Miller, who scored her team’s final eight points of the first half, hit her second 3 of the game early in the third quarter that helped her team extend the lead to as many as 11 points.

Shelbyville had several second-half spurts including a first sparked by Allyson Conner, who hit a short jumper. Skipton followed with a score in the lane and Hibbard sank a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 37-32.

The Lady Golden Bears never got any closer than five points in the third quarter and trailed 45-38 with eight minutes to go.

A 7-1 run by Shelbyville cut the lead to one early in the fourth quarter.

But Lauren Gross drilled a 15-foot jumper, Miller followed with a steal and breakaway layin and Dodd hit a 3-pointer to push the lead back to eight.

Shelbyville’s shooting improved slightly in the second half with a 12-of-32 performance.

“When you’re 1-for-12 at halftime and you’re not getting much better... you’ve got to stop pulling that trigger,” said Norris. “I don’t know if its confidence or lack of confidence but we seem to think that if it’s not going in you keep throwing it. I thought if we got the ball inside we would have had a pretty easy game of pitch-and catch because they were triple-teaming our post. So if you throw it inside, it should have been an easy kick out for a great shot.”

Hauser was a little more efficient at 23-of-54 from the field (43 percent). The Lady Jets outrebounded the Lady Golden Bears, 39-35.

Skipton and Hibbard each had six rebounds. Bush led the Golden Bears with 12 rebounds.

Shelbyville now has a week to prepare for a Saturday road trip to Class 3A, No. 2 ranked Mount Vernon (13-3).
