It's easy to see that the Shelbyville Golden Bears' girls basketball team is in a building stage. Flashes of a strong offense paired with turnovers and hesitation cost the Golden Bears' on Tuesday night as the team fell to the Greensburg Pirates, 53-26.

Coming off the back of a tough loss to East Central over the weekend and entering the game with three varsity starters unavailable on the night, the task was going to be tough for Golden Bears' head coach Amanda Norris.

"Three of our starting guards were injured or ill, so we had to put some of the younger players in who haven't been in that situation before, but it was a night where we needed them to do so," Norris said. "We can't be frustrated with the result because they are young kids without the experience."

At times it showed, particularly in the second quarter when the Golden Bears closed in on the Pirates before sophomore Abbey Denton made a steal and hit a three-pointer. On the inbound the Golden Bears turned the ball back over, giving up a short-range jumper, and turned the ball over again on the inbound pass after a five-second violation was called.

"It seems like there in the second quarter we got so close catching up and possibly getting a lead on them but we could never get over the hump. Every time we battled back we would make a silly mistake or a silly pass and build ourselves that much bigger of a hole to get out of," Norris said.

Greensburg proved to be a physical team throughout the game, and the Golden Bears found themselves out-muscled at times on the court in transition. There are some encouraging signs for Coach Norris and her team, with some players making a big impact on the game, notably freshman Taylor Perry, who grabbed seven rebounds on the night.

"We're trying to adjust our offense a lot," Norris said. "I think our post-play was a lot better and hopefully it can continue to get better throughout the week.

"It's going to be a work in progress. It's going to take this season and maybe some of next season to perfect it for our personnel, but I think it's going to grow and evolve each game."

Kimmie Griffin led the Golden bears in scoring, making her only bucket on the night but provided four free-throws. Madalyn Toll and Kiersten Macklin each grabbed five points.

The Pirates were led by senior Clare Owens who shot 5-of-12 on the night, scoring 12 points; while Taylor McIntosh, Jessica Banaschak and Abbey Denton each had nine.
