Achenbach nearly shoots Shelbyville past Batesville

Riley Achenbach had one of the greatest shooting days ever for the Shelbyville Golden Bears.
The junior guard's career-high 32 points still wasn't enough to lead her team to its first win of the season.
Batesville outscored Shelbyville 23-8 in the third quarter and took advantage of the foul-prone Golden Bears to walk away with a 51-43 victory Saturday afternoon at William L. Garrett Gymnasium.
Bailey Baumer got in foul trouble early and Shelbyville capitalized with an aggressive, trapping defensive effort that resulted in 10 first-quarter turnovers by the Bulldogs.
Shelbyville trailed 7-2 and 9-4 before Achenbach hit her first three-pointer. That sparked a 10-0 run to the end of the first quarter and the Golden Bears, now 0-6, had something they haven't had much this season — the lead.
Achenbach had 11 points in the first eight minutes and reached 15 by halftime, as the Golden Bears maintained a 20-18 advantage.
"I thought the first half was the best we've played all year long," said Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris.
Baumer got back to work in the third quarter, and with teammate Brooke Rohlfing righted the Batesville ship. The two juniors combined for 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals in a quarter when the Bulldogs shot 59 percent from the field.
"We had a huge letdown in the third quarter," said Norris. "I think the girls were so unfamiliar with having the lead that once we got behind again it was, 'Oh great. Here we go.'
"That part we have to change. The way we approach a lead. The way we approach a run."
Achenbach was the only Golden Bear to score in the third quarter, and the team committed 10 turnovers.
Batesville spent enough time at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to hold off any comeback. Thanks to 25 Shelbyville fouls, the Bulldogs attempted 31 free throws, making 17. Shelbyville was 6-of-15 from the free-throw line.
Achenbach hit a pair of 3s to cut a 13-point lead down to seven, but that was as close as the Golden Bears could get. Her 32 points came on 11-of-16 shooting from the field, including 5-of 9 from beyond the arc.
"She shot the lights out," said Norris. "She was definitely feeling it."
Rohlfing led Batesville (6-2) with 14 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and two blocks. Baumer finished with nine points, six rebounds and four assists. Chelsey Paul had 11.
Batesville won the junior varsity game 40-14.
Kimmie Griffin led Shelbyville (1-5) with five points. Morgan Parker finished with four.
Shelbyville hosts New Palestine (1-4) Tuesday in a Hoosier Heritage Conference game.
