Junior guard scores 20 in Golden Bears’ victory over New Palestine

The Shelbyville Golden Bears had to stave off a strong New Palestine comeback in the fourth quarter, but it was heart and determination that saw them through to their first win Tuesday night at Garrett Gymnasium.
It was a funny start to the night, with the Golden Bears scoring the first points of the night - for the Dragons. Despite the early confusion, the Bears bounced back to score the next 10 points.
Riley Achenbach, who led the Golden Bears with 20 points, helped her team early on with some accurate shooting, especially from long range. The junior has hit 10 three-pointers in the last two games and the Golden Bears put up a season high 52 points Tuesday.
“We started off the season a little unhealthy with sickness and injuries, but we’re pulling together as a team and we are working hard to get those shots up,” Achenbach said.
The Golden Bears have scored 95 points in their last two games with Achenbach getting 52 of them.
Leading 15-11 after the first quarter, the Golden Bears pressed the Dragons to extend their lead. New Pal freshman Haley Stratman kept the visitors close by helping cut Shelbyville’s lead to just four points heading into halftime.
Shelbyville (1-6, 1-1 Hoosier Heritage Conference) put in an impressive offensive performance on the night, quick in the transition and physical in the paint. But the highlight of the night was Achenbach’s five three-pointers and near-perfect shooting, only missing one shot in the fourth quarter.
“Riley’s a great shooter and she is kind of a point guard by default,” Norris said. “We need someone who can bring the ball up the floor so we’ve designed some plays to get her a shot. When she is hitting, they’re money. She’s feeling it right now and she’s making great decisions, which I think is propelling her offense right now.”
Achenbach was 7-of-8 from the floor including 5-for-6 from the 3-point line to lead the Golden Bears.
The Dragons (1-5, 0-2 HHC) countered with Stratman, who scored 17 points on the night.
New Palestine pressed the ball hard in the fourth quarter to cut into the lead, but senior Megan Fix hit two free throws with 33 seconds remaining to ice the game for Shelbyville.
“Ugly counts,” Norris said. “Right now we need this, and for so many different reasons. We are working on some things and are continuing to get better. We’re weaker than a lot of the teams we play and that has hurt us. Mentally, emotionally, we needed a win to get the ball rolling. The girls believe in what we are doing and are working for the common cause.”
The junior varsity team also won on the night, defeating the Dragons 28-11. Taylor Perry led Shelbyville (2-4) with 10 points.
