Shelbyville has struggled offensively all season. So trying to compete in the Shelby Shootout without leading scorer Riley Achenbach made the Golden Bears’ task that much tougher.

Thanks to a valiant first-half effort by Jacqueline Lux and an amazing three-quarter court shot by Allyson Conner just before halftime, Shelbyville battled Decatur Central for 16 minutes.

Then the offense bogged down in the third quarter and Decatur Central went on a 17-2 run to secure a 61-33 semifinal win. Shelbyville, who also was without injured senior Kiersten Macklin, had nothing left in the tank in a 55-23 loss in the consolation game to Lawrence Central.

Lux had 14 points and three rebounds against Decatur Central, a newcomer to the Shelby Shootout.

“She did a good job of attacking the basket and picking and choosing the shots for her,” said Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris.

Taylor Pierce led the Golden Bears (2-10) with eight points against Lawrence Central (4-6).

After losing in the 2010 championship game and getting upset by Lawrence Central in the 2011 semifinals, Class 4A No. 10 Westfield finally celebrated a shootout championship with a 64-52 win over Decatur Central (6-7).

“We’ve had a little bit of a bad taste in our mouth in this tournament,” said Westfield coach Shane Sumpter. “We’ve talked about that for about week now how we’ve haven’t played well over here.”

Jenn Anderson, a 6-foot-3 senior center who will play at Indiana University next fall, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after posting double-doubles in wins over Lawrence Central and Decatur Central. She was 14-of-15 from the field in the tournament and 11 of 15 from the free-throw line.

“She’s been that kind of player for us for four years now,” said Sumpter of Westfield’s career scoring leader. “She’s very good around the basket. She has great hands. It’s a big luxury to have when you need a basket you can throw it into someone like that.”

Junior guard Kayla Brown also was impressive in scoring 23 points and collecting eight assists in the championship game. The 6-2 guard is garnering interest from several mid-major basketball programs, according to Sumpter.

Brittany Dailey finished with 11 points and Macy Walker had 10 against Westfield and earned All-Tournament Team honors. Also selected to the five-player squad were Lawrence Central twins Chalyn and Calyn Hosea.

Decatur Central’s offense struggled to get going in the semifinal opener against Shelbyville and the Golden Bears bounced out to a 6-0 lead on a pair of scores by Lux and a Cassady Skipton 10 footer in the lane.

Kayla Williams gave Decatur Central, who played without its own injured leading scorer Shelbi Patterson (10.6 ppg), scored the final seven points of the first quarter to take a 9-8 lead that it never relinquished.

The Hawks’ lead grew to 19-12 before the Golden Bears rallied when Pierce scored off an offensive rebound and Conner heaved a laser beam from beyond half court that banked in.

Dailey had nine of her game-high 16 points in a third quarter dominated by Decatur Central.

“Our first half was phenomenal,” said Norris. “We have to go back to the drawing board and see if we ran out of steam, had a mix of players that shouldn’t have been in together or any number of things. We didn’t show up with the intensity of the first half after the halftime buzzer went off.”

The Hawks hit 10 of 14 free throws in the final quarter to earn a berth in the championship game.

Anderson had 17 points and 10 rebounds to push Westfield into the championship game. Calyn Hosea led Lawrence Central with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Anderson had nine first-quarter points against Decatur Central and the Shamrocks (12-1) got off to the fast start it needed.

Westfield led 31-19 at halftime and Brown hit a pair of 3s in the third quarter to keep the lead in double digits. Decatur Central cut the lead to six with 1:50 to go but the Shamrocks made 9 of 10 free throws over the final 94 seconds.

Westfield also won the Junior varsity tournament with a 32-18 win over Decatur Central. Shelbyville lost to Lawrence Central, 42-31, in the consolation game.
