Whiteland defense puts on pressure in 59-32 loss for the Golden Bears

WHITELAND — Opposing coaches that scout Shelbyville usually find one self-evident flaw. The Golden Bears struggle to take care of the ball against a full court, trapping defensive press.

Amanda Norris' group has taken strides this season to improve its ball handling and decision making but Thursday's performance at Whiteland was disheartening.

Shelbyville committed 20 first-half turnovers and fell behind by 20 points to the Warriors. A three-pointer by Megan Fix early in the fourth quarter cut that lead down to 14 but the Golden Bears would get no closer in a 59-32 loss at Glenn Ray Gymnasium.

Whiteland's Jordyn Francis hit four 3s to lead all scorers with 19 points. Chelsea Perry finished with 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Allyson Conner and Riley Achenbach each had 10 points to lead Shelbyville (2-14).

The Golden Bears overcame eight first-quarter miscues to keep it close. An Achenbach 3 with 2:24 left cut Whiteland's lead to 12-9. It would be another six minutes before Shelbyville scored again, though, and by then, the Warriors (8-9) had sprinted away to a 26-9 lead.

"It's no shock to us that everyone is going to press us," said Norris. "We just didn't handle their press nearly as well as we've handled everyone's all year long."

An injury and illness-plagued roster has struggled to grow together this season. On Thursday, the junior varsity played without Haelynne Poole (injury) while the varsity was without Bree Elrod (illness).

Despite Achenbach hitting two 3s in the first quarter, Shelbyville couldn't limit Whiteland's extra possessions created by the constant double teams.

Francis had eight points over the first eight minutes while Perry scored six in the the second quarter. The Warriors outscored the Golden Bears 16-4 in the second quarter to take a 33-13 halftime lead.

"I maintain we're still improving," said Norris, who has enjoyed the work ethic of this year's team despite its troubles. "We're still working on us. We've taken our kicks this year but at the same time we never stop battling."

Whiteland head coach Kyle Shipp, a former assistant at Shelbyville, called off the full-court trap in the second half and the Golden Bears started executing in the half court.

Shelbyville won the third quarter 15-12 behind eight points from Conner, who slipped through the Whiteland defense for several close-range shots.

Fix's 3-pointer opened the fourth-quarter scoring and cut Whiteland's lead to 45-31. The Warriors then scored the next 11 points to seal the win.

Whiteland won the junior varsity game 34-29 when Shelbyville's fourth-quarter rally fell short.

Morgan Parker had 10 points and Kimmie Griffin and Taylor Perry each had eight for a Golden Bear squad that outscored its opponent 17-4 over the final six minutes.
