EDINBURGH — The energy of Alexis Tackett overwhelmed Edinburgh and helped Shelbyville produce a 53-27 season-opening win.

The sophomore collected career highs in points (23) and rebounds (16) Tuesday and was part of a harassing defense that forced the Lancers into 26 turnovers, including 10 before they ever scored a point.

"She crashes that offensive glass and gives everything she has on the floor," said Shelbyville coach Scott Larrabee of Tackett. "She played outstanding in a lot of factors. I thought she really set the tone in the beginning of the game with our defense. She really disrupted Edinburgh's half-court offense. It was hard to tell but they were really trying to pound it inside on us and weren't able to do it at the point of attack because she did a nice job. That really set the tone."

With an inexperienced roster, a fast start made a road win come much easier.

Taylor Perry scored from close range 22 seconds into the game to stake Shelbyville to the lead. She added a pair of free throws 79 seconds later and Tackett took the ball away from a Lancer and scored to make it 6-0.

Abby Orem and Tackett each hit 1 of 2 free throws and Tackett again slashed into the lane and scored and Edinburgh was facing a 10-0 deficit with two minutes left in the quarter.

"I thought we played our style and set the tempo, which was our goal coming in," said Larrabee. "First game... new team... players in a lot of different roles... and we had to deal with foul trouble and we were still able to play at our pace."

Edinburgh's first points of the season came on a pair of free throws from Mariah Weddle at the 1:48 mark.

Morgan Parker beat the buzzer for a three-pointer at the end of the quarter to give Shelbyville a 15-4 lead and the junior hit another trifecta early in the second quarter. She finished with 15 points, six rebounds and two steals.

The Shelbyville lead at halftime was 23-10 and a 10-0 run in the third quarter, in which Tackett had six, extended the lead to 33-13.

Tackett, her team's leading returning scorer (6.1 ppg) from last season, had eight points in the third quarter when she admitted to settling down, and grabbed six of her game-high 16 rebounds in the fourth.

"The first half, I was kind of shaky but, in the second half, I really found my way, made more buckets and got more rebounds," said Tackett. "It all came together for me in the second half."

Edinburgh pulled away in the fourth quarter to win the junior varsity game, 42-30.

Shey Tillison led the Golden Bears with 10 points. Madalyn Toll finished with eight.

Makenzie Hill topped the Lancers with 14 points.

Shelbyville is back in action Saturday at East Central.

BLOOMINGTON — First year Shelbyville head coach Scott Larrabee could not be more proud of his Lady Golden Bears.

Despite a 78-33 loss to Clas 4A, No. 3 Columbus North Tuesday night in the first round of Sectional 14, Larrabee showed no signs of anger when the final buzzer sounded.

“I thought we played with some forward thinking, and we didn’t play the scoreboard,” he said. “Our effort was great from start to finish, and we went out there and battled with a top three team in the state.”

The Golden Bears doubled their win total this season finishing 7-14 and performed much better than last year in sectional play versus a top-tier program.

“Obviously, Columbus North, that team has had a lot of success lately,” Larrabee said. “They’ve been to the state finals the last few years.”

Ali Patberg, a Notre Dame recruit, sat out the game with an ankle injury but the No. 3-ranked Bulldogs (20-2) still had two Division I players on the court in Tayler Goodall and Kelsey Cunningham.

That duo got the Bulldogs off to a 7-0 start, but a pair of Shelbyville seniors would quickly answer. Allyson Conner hit back-to-back three-pointers on assists from Riley Achenbach to fuel the Golden Bears within one.

Columbus North would then turn up the heat with their quickness, pressing Shelbyville to 10 turnovers in the first quarter, finishing on a 12-0 rally.

Goodall, a Florida Gulf Coast recruit, would take over and finish with four 3-pointers and 16 points in the half, giving the Bulldogs a 34-12 advantage.

Shelbyville would open the second half with its best quarter yet, scoring 12 points, but eventually ran out gas against a much-deeper squad that saw 11 players see valuable minutes.

Conner led the Golden Bears with eight points on 3-of-8 shooting. Achenbach chipped in seven points and two assists while fellow senior Taylor Pierce scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds.

Larrabee says enjoying the game of basketball will be the key to the Golden Bears’ success next year.

“You have to enjoy what you do. If you don’t enjoy it, you won’t want to work to get better,” he said. “We have to commit to wanting to get better. Next year’s season starts now.”

Shelbyville will have to do so without four seniors, including three starters. Seven players return next season that saw playing time Tuesday night. Larrabee even celebrated enthusiastically after one of his reserves hit a free throw late in the fourth quarter.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the improvements we’ve made from when I got here, to now,” he said. “I couldn’t be more happy to coach our seniors.”

Notes: Goodall finished with a game high 22 points, while Cunningham, a Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruit, had eight points, four rebounds, and four assists. ... Shelbyville sophomore Morgan Parker added six points, three rebounds, and an assist. ... The Golden Bears finished 18-of-25 from the line.

No matter the outcome of the IHSAA’s 39th Annual Girls Basketball State Tournament, Shelbyville’s Riley Achenbach, Triton Central’s Sarah Rogian and Southwestern’s Annie Thomas and Oda Shackelford will go on to play basketball at the collegiate level.

For the rest of the seniors in Shelby County’s five basketball programs, the end of their basketball careers is near.

Shelbyville and Triton Central begin sectional tournaments tonight while Southwestern and Waldron join Morristown at the Bee Hive on Wednesday to kick off the quest for a state championship.

The smart money has Class A, No. 2 Southwestern returning to the Final Four for a third straight season, Triton Central playing for another regional championship and Shelbyville, Morristown and Waldron struggling against two of the state’s top teams in their respective classes.

Columbus North played in the 2012 state championship game, won a 2013 sectional title then was defeated by eventual state champion Bedford North Lawrence in the regional.

The talent is still there. The Bull Dogs have three Division I commitments including Notre Dame signee Ali Patberg.

Shelbyville’s 7-win season is as solid as it sounds. There just is not enough talent there to compete with Columbus North tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Prediction: Columbus North 73, Shelbyville 29

Sagarin prediction: Columbus North is favored by 43 points
