When you are a struggling program trying to regain its winning ways, giving away a victory can be disheartening.

Batesville shot 22 percent from the field Saturday afternoon at William L. Garrett Gymnasium in Shelbyville but hit 28 of 38 free throws to steal a 50-45 win from the Golden Bears.

Despite the Bulldogs’ inability to put the ball in the basket, Shelbyville continued to rack up foul calls that bailed out a struggling club.

“We’re jerks in practice. We call every little ticky-tacky foul. We call every little travel. And the girls complain all the time,” said Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris. “But when we give out 28 of the 50 points they score on free throws, it’s pretty obvious we need to be even bigger jerks in practice.”

Shelbyville (2-5) built a 7-0 lead while Batesville missed its first 12 shot attempts. With a pair of free throws by Brooke Rohlfing and Bailey Baumer, that lead was reduced to 8-6 by the end of the first eight minutes.

The Bulldogs made just 3-of-11 field goal attempts in the second quarter, but connected on 8-of-11 free throws to lead 20-19.

Caitlin Mills had five of her nine points in the third quarter to help Shelbyville tie the score at 30 with eight minutes left to go. But Shelbyville already had seven fouls racked up, and Batesville would get into the double bonus early on in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs finally hit some shots in that fourth quarter and took a 43-40 lead with 2:11 to go. Both teams exchanged a pair of free throws before Ashley Bush stepped out to the top of the key and hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 92 seconds left.

That would be the final points for the Golden Bears, who missed two final shots and had a turnover down the stretch.

”We’ve got to go back and work even harder and figure out our defense... and then execute our defense,” said Norris. “It’s frustrating when we had three great practices this week... defensively, especially, and then play like that on defense.”

Chelsey Skipton led Shelbyville with 16 points and four rebounds. Chelsee Simerly came off the bench for a team-high eight rebounds. Mills also had eight rebounds.

Fawn Ryan topped Batesville with 18 points, 14 from the free-throw line.

Shelbyville won the junior varsity game 27-22.

Greenfield-Central’s first-quarter shooting touch was as cold as the weather outside William L. Garrett Gymnasium.

And while it didn’t get any warmer outdoors, the Lady Cougars heated up enough in the second quarter to take control and roll to a 49-33 Hoosier Heritage Conference win Tuesday over Shelbyville.

LaRae Cruz, who missed her first seven shots of the game, finished with a team-high 15 points. Kyra Tweedy hit a pair of 3-pointers to help get to 10 points.

Chelsey Skipton led Shelbyville (2-4, 0-3 HHC) with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Caitlin Mills finished with nine points and five rebounds. Ashley Bush had five points and 10 rebounds.

Shelbyville led 8-3 after a first quarter that saw Greenfield-Central (3-3, 1-1 HHC) miss 17 of 18 shots from the field. But Shelbyville managed just seven shots in the second quarter and was outscored 15-3 to trail 18-11 at halftime.

Cruz scored seven points in the third quarter when Greenfield-Central opened the lead to double digits.

Mills scored the first three points of the fourth quarter but Kayla Good and Tweedy answered with 3-pointers to seal the victory.

Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris believed her improving squad could go toe-to-toe with the Cougars, and the first quarter proved so. Once the Bears got down, though, there wasn’t enough offensive firepower to get back in the game.

”We had good effort but... We played hard but... I think we’re all getting tired of saying but,” said Norris. “We’re waiting on someone to step up and break the mold. Someone step out and say they’re tired of this and turn it around. We didn’t have that tonight.”

Shelbyville finished 9 of 37 (24 percent) from the field and was 1 of 7 from the 3-point arc.

”This is a Greenfield team we could have, and should have beaten,” said Norris. “I know that’s a bold statement but I’m confident that my team could beat them.

”Somebody put a lid on that basket. We just couldn’t hit our shots.”

Greenfield-Central struggled with the rims at Garrett Gymnasium, too. The Cougars shot 31 percent from the field, but took 22 more shots than Shelbyville.

In the junior varsity game, Shelbyville improved to 4-2 this season with a 39-31 win.

Allison Gobel led the Golden Bears with 10 points. Taylor Pierce and Ashley Scudder each had eight.

Emily Koers scored 18 points for Greenfield-Central.

Shelbyville returns to the court Saturday afternoon against Batesville.
