Shelbyville’s bid to end three separate losing streaks at the Shelby Shootout proved too tall a task to handle.

Despite Rushville making every effort to give the game to Shelbyville in the semifinal opener of the 2011 holiday tournament at William L. Garrett Gymnasium in Shelbyville, the Lady Golden Bears couldn’t pull out a win that would have ended a 30-game Hoosier Heritage Conference losing streak, a six-game Shelby Shootout skid, and a 5-game downer against the Lady Lions.

So after losing 43-41 in overtime to Rushville and with little left the proverbial tanks, Shelbyville was overmatched by Westfield and 6-foot-3 center Jenn Anderson, who had a double-double in both games Wednesday.

Anderson scored 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Westfield to a 66-43 consolation game victory.

“We got our little hearts broken (against Rushville)... every single one of us,” said Shelbyville coach Amanda Norris. “I went home and played my Wii and pouted like a little girl (in between games), and I’m sure it will continue to sting for the girls. Hopefully, it will drive us for the rest of the year.”

While Shelbyville carried momentum into the tournament – and a .500 record, Lawrence Central arrived on a 4-game losing streak after starting the season 4-0 – which included a 58-49 win over then Class 3A, No. 1-ranked Mount Vernon.

The Lady Bears stunned favored Westfield in the semifinals when Calyn Hosea hit a 3-pointer just before time expired for a 44-41 win. Then Lawrence Central used a strong second-half performance to knock off Rushville, 49-44 and claim its first Shelby Shootout championship.

“I think we were sick of losing,” said Lawrence Central coach John Albers. “We started out 4-0, beat some ranked teams and did some outstanding things. Then we lost four straight games to ranked teams. We have a tough schedule and it’s allowing us to learn and grow.”

The Lady Bears never flinched in the championship game despite falling behind 22-11 at halftime to Rushville – the defending Shootout champions. The program’s athleticism started taking over and just eight minutes later the game was tied at 27-27 going into the final quarter.

Kyra Tucker hit a 3-pointer less than 30 seconds into the fourth quarter to give Lawrence Central its first lead of the game. Tucker was there for her team again with another 3-pointer at the 3:22 mark to give her team a 39-33 lead.

“She’s only a sophomore and that’s something I have to continue to understand,” said Albers. “She’s still in that learning mode. When she doesn’t do well, we struggle. When she’s a threat and teams have to guard her, that opens up everything else we have to offer.”

Tucker had 15 points, three rebounds and five assists to solidify herself as the Shelby Shootout’s Most Outstanding Player. The 5-9 forward scored 13 points and had two steals in her team’s morning win – one in which she injured her ankle early on in the contest.

Tucker added another score with 2:20 to go, and McKenzy Telfair hit two free throws to give the Lady Bears a 44-33 lead.

Rushville (7-6) got 15 points and six rebounds from freshman Sarah Cook. Sophomore Mackenzie Campbell finished wih 14 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Rushville shot nearly 50 percent from the field, but as in the Shelbyville game – struggled at the free-throw line. The Lions hit just 9-of-17 attempts against the Lady Bears after struggling to a 9-of-26 performance against Shelbyville.

Campbell was named to the All-Tournament team. She was joined by Hosea (7 points, eight rebounds, three blocks against Rushville), Anderson and her teammate Kayla Brown and Shelbyville’s Ashley Bush.

Sportsmanship winners were Lawrence Central’s Breanna Jones, Westfield’s Amy Shedd, Rushville’s Janna Green and Shelbyville’s Chelsee Simerly.

Not only did Shelbyville struggle with Anderson, it also had a hard time dealing with Brown – a 6-1 sophomore point guard who finished with 20 points, four rebounds and six assists.

“That was a very tough matchup for us,” said Norris. “We don’t traditionally defend guards very well. Our on-ball pressure needs a lot of improvement.”

Shelbyville (5-7) trailed 11-6 after one quarter, and as much as 22-10 in the second quarter before a late run cut the lead to eight by halftime.

Chelsey Skipton hit a 3-pointer to start the third-quarter scoring for Shelbyville, but the Lady Shamrocks (9-4) scored the next eight points and never looked back on the way to a 48-28 advantage after three quarters.

Norris pulled most of the starters for the entire fourth quarter for a program that is wearing down due to a lack of overall numbers.

The Lady Golden Bears didn’t help themselves by going to overtime with Rushville in the morning session.

Following a Mikayla Dougherty 3-pointer – her third of the third quarter – Rushville led 28-20. Skipton answered with a free throw and Riley Achenbach hit a floater in the lane just before the horn sounded to end the third quarter with Shelbyville down 28-23.

In the fourth quarter, a quick score from Bush cut the lead to three. And Allison Gobel drained a 17 footer to make it 28-27 with 5:54 to go.

Cook scored off an offensive rebound and Norris called timeout. Off a set play, Raven Hibbard found Achenbach wide open for a 3-pointer and the game was tied at 30-30.

Both teams struggled to take care of the ball down the stretch, and each had chances to ice the win after Campbell hit a free throw with 1:56 to go that tied the game at 33-33.

Shelbyville’s best chance came after Keragan Niehoff missed a free throw with 29 seconds to go. Following a timeout with 11 seconds left, the Lady Golden Bears worked the ball into the low post to Bush. She was immediately double teamed and traveled while trying to make a move.

After a Rushville timeout, Campbell tried to throw a long pass down court but Hibbard intercepted it near the top of the key and Shelbyville called timeout with 2.8 seconds to go. Skipton was able to get off an off-balance 17 footer but it missed the mark.

In overtime, Rushville continued to struggle from the free-throw line but three Shelbyville turnovers kept the game close.

Simerly hit her first 3-pointer of the season with 1:30 to go to give the Lady Golden Bears a 39-38 lead. Campbell got Rushville the lead back, and Cook added a free throw to make it 41-39.

Gobel scored on a back door cut to tie the game again with 14 seconds on the clock.

But Campbell was fouled driving to the basket and earned two free-throw attempts. After the Lady Lions missed 17-of-24 free throws in the game, Campbell finally hit a pair to get the win.

In the second semifinal, Lawrence Central capitalized on 25 Westfield turnovers to keep it close.

Anderson hit 9-of-11 shots from the field for 19 points, and pulled down 12 rebounds – but she had just two points in a fourth quarter where the Lady Shamrocks scored just four points.

Shelbyville tops East Central to take .500 record into holiday break

Forgive the Lady Golden Bears if they didn’t get to put a shiny bow on top of head coach Amanda Norris’ Christmas present.

Despite time seemingly standing still for the final two minutes Wednesday night inside William L. Garrett Gymnasium, Shelbyville was incredibly busy fending off East Central. A lead that once was 14 points late in the third quarter was now down to one with 14.7 seconds left on the clock.

Chelsey Skipton hit a free throw to make it 57-55 in favor of Shelbyville with 13.1 seconds to go. And following an East Central turnover, Riley Achenbach added one more free throw with 7.2 seconds left.

East Central point guard Jenna Hountz took the ball and raced down court for an easy layin much to the dismay of her coach. Shelbyville was more than glad to let her do so. Skipton collected the ball from the net and stood out of bounds as the final two seconds ticked off the clock. Meanwhile East Central coach Kevin Moore took out his frustration on a pair of chairs at the end of his bench.

The final score was 58-57. And that gives Shelbyville a .500 record at the holiday break for the first time since the 2007 season. The fifth win also equals the total number of wins Shelbyville had last season.

Merry Christmas Amanda Norris.

“I don’t think I’ve been in this situation since I was in high school and my ticker is not what it used to be,” said Norris. “I thought for sure I was going to have a heart attack on the floor when I saw our girls fouling. We had a nice comfortable lead and (East Central) brings it back close and we’re still fouling. But I thought the girls did a really good job of coming together as a team.”

East Central (6-4) nearly didn’t survive a horrific first quarter in which it committed five turnovers and missed its first four shots before finally getting on the scoreboard. By then, Shelbyville was off to an 8-0 start.

The Lady Trojans, who came to Garrett Gym riding a 5-game winning streak, shot 1-of-11 from the field in the first quarter and had nine turnovers in part to the Shelbyville defense.

“I’m going to keep showing our girls the first quarter,” said Norris. “I thought our defensive rotations in that first quarter were absolutely amazing.

“Our struggle is, they made a run in the second quarter and we put our heads down. We have to understand how to weather the storms. When you hold someone to two points in the first quarter, it’s going to be really hard to replicate that. They’re going to find ways around your defense.”

Six different Lady Golden Bears scored in the first quarter to build a 14-2 lead. Then the shooting touch cooled off and East Central turned up its intensity level.

The Lady Trojans put together a 19-8 run that cut Shelbyville’s lead to 22-21. But the Lady Golden Bears never relinquished the lead.

Kay Brokering hit a free throw. Chelsey Skipton drilled a three-pointer and Allison Gobel swished a pair of free throws, and Shelbyville took a 28-22 lead into halftime.

East Central got as close as four points early in the third quarter, but again Shelbyville responded. A 9-0 run capped off by a Riley Achenbach fast-break transition layin made it 41-28. And when Gobel hit a 10-foot jumper from the wing with 51 seconds to go in the third quarter, Shelbyville had its biggest lead of the game at 45-31.

With some help from the Lady Golden Bears, East Central kept chipping away at the lead over the final eight minutes. Shelbyville had eight turnovers and went just 4-of-9 from the free-throw line in the quarter.

“We will work on free throws and layups,” said Norris.

Shelbyville went scoreless for nearly a three-minute stretch in the second half of the fourth quarter and East Central scored nine straight points.

A Raven Hibbard layin made it 56-50 in favor of Shelbyville with 1:30 to go.

Rebecca Weber hit a free throw for East Central and Peyton Napier connected on a 3-pointer to make it 56-54 with 21 seconds left on the clock.

Despite Skipton going just 1-of-4 from the free-throw line, she still led the Lady Golden Bears with 15 points and seven rebounds. Ashley Bush finished with 11 points and three rebounds. Achenbach added 10 and Gobel had eight.

Sarah Packer led East Central with 13 points. Weber notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

East Central won the junior varsity game 49-32.

Allyson Conner led the Lady Golden Bears (3-6) with 12 points.

No Shelby County basketball program is more ready for the Christmas break than Waldron.

Meanwhile, the Shelbyville Lady Golden Bears want to gift wrap one more win for head coach Amanda Norris to send the program into the break with a .500 record. That could happen Wednesday night when East Central comes to town.

A laboring Waldron program limped into William L. Garrett Gymnasium Saturday afternoon to play its third game in a week against a larger school system. And it did so without starting forward Haley Coffey, who is battling a knee injury.

Shelbyville benefitted from the return of second leading scorer Ashley Bush, who was sidelined for two games with an injury. Bush nearly had a double-double in the Lady Golden Bears’ 67-32 victory over Waldron which improved the program’s record to 4-5 this season.

The Lady Mohawks’ dropped their sixth straight to fall to 1-10 under first-year coach Rod Suiter.

“We can’t wait for Santa Claus to get here ... that’s for sure,” said Suiter, who needs either a heady point guard that can take care of the ball or a pure scorer that can amplify an offense averaging just 36 points per game this season.

Waldron opened the county matchup Saturday with a long jumper by Lauren Suiter – the coach’s daughter. But Shelbyville answered with a 15-1 run with most of the damage coming from Bush and sophomore guard Riley Achenbach.

Bush scored in the lane to get Shelbyville on the scoreboard and tie the game. Raven Hibbard hit a 3-pointer two minutes later and Achenbach scored on back-to-back steals to make it 9-2.

After a Lauren Harker free throw ended Waldron’s scoring drought, Shelbyville’s leading scorer, Chelsey Skipton, drove the lane and collected her first two points of the game. The junior struggled shooting the ball against the Lady Mohawks, but still finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Bush scored the next four points and Achenbach hit a half-court bomb just before the buzzer to give Shelbyville an 18-5 advantage.

Waldron never got the lead under double digits the rest of the way, but put forth a better offensive effort despite shooting 25 percent from the field.

“I thought we handled what little pressure Shelbyville threw at us,” said Suiter. “Mistakes on our own, just careless turnovers, hurt us. We have too many self-inflicted turnovers.”

Waldron finished with 33 turnovers, including 13 in the third quarter when it was outscored 17-9.

Laura Crosby led the Lady Mohawks with 11 points and eight rebounds. Shawna Jackson and Harker each had seven.

For Shelbyville, it was a much-needed win after back-to-back losses. It just wasn’t the top-notch performance that the coach wanted to see.

“This is a momentum-builder,” said Norris. “We didn’t accomplish any of our goals but we got a win. So we’re one step closer to .500 which is a huge goal for us this season.

“We’re still working on a complete game. It’s a win but it shows we’re still not playing the type of game that we’re capable of playing.”

Shelbyville’s balanced offensive attack was aided by Bush’s 10 points and eight rebounds. Allison Gobel had nine points and two steals.

It was Achenbach, though, that proved to be the most difficult matchup for Waldron. She finished with a game-high 13 points, grabbed four rebounds, handed out three assists and collected six steals.

“We’ve challenged Riley to step up defensively and be more aggressive,” said Norris. “She was much more aggressive today and smarter about it.”

Since Waldron did not have a junior varsity squad available Saturday, Shelbyville faced Morristown’s junior varsity squad.

The Golden Bears got 11 points from Kay Brokering and 10 from Allyson Conner to defeat the Yellow Jackets, 40-23.

Victoria Montarsi and Kayla Schuyler each had six points for Morristown.

Waldron is now off until Dec. 29 when Oldenburg (9-3) visits.

For the third time this season, Shelbyville will face a potential sectional opponent in East Central (6-3) on Wednesday.
