Shelbyville Golden Bears - 10/25 - Coach John Fair has had to deal with an ACL tear to one of his stars Gwen Haehl (5'8 G '04) during a summer game, but he says she practiced today (19th) during shooting drills and will hopefully be cleared by January for games. Her twin sister Gretchen Haehl (5'5 PG '04) is a coach's dream and she has a couple nice wings and posts to go with her which should be enough for Shelbyville, 19-4 a year ago, to be among the elite 3A teams even before Gwen Haehl returns. Susan Kolls (5'8 G/F '02) averaged 8 PPG, 4 RPG and 2 APG a year ago and "can play any position, very intelligent, good work ethic and works dilligently in the weight room," Fair says. Another senior is the "best defensive player" on the team, Ashley Matney (5'7 G). Matney averaged 5 PPG and shares "fastest players on the team" honors with junior Alison Berger (5'6 G), who "didn't get a whole lot of time" last year but has "improved a lot through AAU." Another junior to watch is Katie Douglas (6'0 C), who coach Fair thinks is "going to have a breakout year" after averaging 7 PPG and 5 RPG last year. Her running mate in the post is Haley Wise (5'11 F '04), who "has a nice shooting touch 17' and in." The 7th Player will be Jessica Horner (5'9 F '03). "Horner can hit big shots and defend." Last year, the Golden Bears "broke the record for victories and did very good, but we need championships. We're in the Hoosier Heritage (Conference), the Hall of Fame tournament (Frankfort plays Wawasee, Shelbyville has Jennings County) and the sectional to concentrate on for that."
