Lady Mats Earn the top spot and set the La Mirada Record for Team Time

The La Mirada Matadores boys and girls teams took to the flat, fast Warren-Stauffer course last Saturday with excellent results. Running by grade level, the Lady Mats were able to field individual winners in the Junior and Senior races, and secure 4th place in the freshman and sophomore races. Most of the varsity boys took the day off to train.

Temperatures were in the mid-70s all day and conditions were perfect for running. Starting the day off, the freshman girl's team was led by Ashley Casanover and Celinda Manzo who finished 4th and 11th respectively. While all the girls earned a PR, Ashley's time of 19:25 is the fastest ever by a freshman from La Mirada on the blazing fast course. In the boy's race, both Nick Meek and Frankie Nogales ran their fastest races of the season.

Senior boys and girls ran next. In the girl's race, Stephanie Felix made a serious attempt at breaking her own course record set in 2005. She was ahead of pace early on, but slowed down as she ran the numerous new turns that were added to the course this year. Ultimately, her time of 17:18 made her the fastest girl of the day. Sarah Jeon was the only other senior in the race and ended up being the fifth scorer for the girls. In the boy's race, Enrique Nava entered new territory with a PR that put him under 20 minutes for the first time in his career.

Melissa Byrd pushed her way to the front of the pack just after the first mile and never looked back in the junior girls race. Her first place finish paced the junior girls to 3rd place in their heat. They were the only Matadore team to place in the top three at the race. Tatiana Cortes secured her spot on the varsity team with a fine race, and Valerie Wong climbed higher up the ladder of success as she earned a PR over 2 minutes faster than her previous best. The junior boys were paced by Mateo Cordova.

After waiting all morning, the sophomore crew took to the field to end the day. Lauren McIntyre, running without Stephanie or Melissa pacing her, was in the front for the first mile before being overtaken by Dani Moreno, last year's overall winner. Although she challenged the leaders the entire course, Lauren completed the 3-mile course in 4th place with a time 18:43, a PR. She was named the La Mirada athlete of the meet. In the boy's race, both Andrew Herrick and Richard Marquez made huge breakthroughs in their racing and entered La Mirada's elite list of top ten sophomores. For his effort, Richard was named the boys athlete of the meet for the Matadores and Andrew was named "Runner of the Week."

When the times were tallied, it was learned that the Lady Mats were winners of the meet with an overall team time of 1:34:31. It was the fifth fastest time recorded at the Warren-Stauffer Invitational and is a new school record for the girls.

Suburban League Cluster Meet #1

Suburban League Cluster Meet #1:  Cerritos Regional Park

Although temperatures were barely in the high 80s, the humidity increased the "real feel" temperature to the point that it became a day more fit for relaxing at the beach than for competitive running. Still, the calendar was set and the Matadores knew what was expected of them. For the Cerritos Dons, the day was a bittersweet one. It began with a memorial service for Regina Nicole Roman, who's life was cut short in a fatal auto accident on the way home from cross country camp, and ended with first place finishes for the boys Varsity and boys and girls JV teams. Only the Lady Mats were able to prevent a clean sweep.

Racing by level, the girls JV team -- 21 runners strong -- took to the flat 3-mile course with aspirations of a first place finish. Cerritos had other plans as they were able to place their top five athletes in the top five spots for a sweep of the field. Aja Labasan, Valerie Wong, and Lillian Mignella, who found themselves down 15-54 at the first mile, were able to work their way into the top 10 and lower their overall total score to 50. It was not enough to overcome the huge Cerritos team and in the end the girls had to be satisfied with a 2nd place finish. Monica Ramirez and Carly Clase were the 4th and 5th scorer for the JV Lady Mats. Running in their first race of the season were Yvette Garcia, Halie Santillian, and Charlene Ganton.

Next up were the JV boys. Mateo Cordova jumped out to an early lead before being overwhelmed by the HUGE field of 110 runners and dropped into the 12th spot, where he ultimately finished, by the end of the first mile. Regan Garcia, Matt Campbell, Enrique Nava, and Miguel Franco rounded out the top 5 scoring Matadores who were less than pleased with their 3rd place finish. Aaron Cordova and William Gomez competed in their first race of the season.

After a short break in the action, it was time for the varsity races to begin. The girls were blindsided with the news that Clarissa would not be participating in the meet due to a debilitating illness. They also knew that, even though she would compete, Tatiana Cortes was less than 100%. Together, they made the decision to call on rookie Celinda Manzo and give her the opportunity to don the varsity uniform. Seeing their teammates settle for 2nd and 3rd place, made the girls somewhat anxious to get things started. In fact, Stephanie Felix, Melissa Byrd, and Lauren McIntyre were in such a hurry to get to the starting line that they didn't realize they were missing their name tags until just before the gun sounded. When the gun sounded they were able to regroup, find a rhythm, and stick to the game plan for the first half of the race. The plan was simple: run in a comfortable pack for the first 2 miles then pick it up. At the first mile Mayfair's senior, Kristina Rogers, was in the lead and Ashley Casanover and Sarah Jeon were running with Stephanie, Lauren, and Melissa. Surprisingly, Celinda was in the top 10, just ahead of Tatiana. By mile two the girls were in positions number 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 14, where they eventually finished the race. Their score of 21 points was insurmountable and represents the lowest score by a Lady Mat team since the 2001 team scored 20 points at League Finals.

Since the early 80s, one boy's team has dominated the Suburban League. La Mirada was league champion in 1994 and 1996, John Glenn was league champion in 1987 and 1995, and Cerritos was league champion in 1998. Other than that, the Norwalk High School Lancers, under the direction of head coach Carl Van Gorden, have been at the top twenty-two times since 1980. When coach Van Gorden retired at the end of the 2006 season, everyone wondered what would happen to his dynasty. Even though the season is far from over and Norwalk is not to be counted out, one thing is known after the first cluster meet: the league title is up for grabs! From the beginning of the race, the lead changed again and again. At the end of the first mile, the Matadores found themselves in 3rd place, just behind the Lancers. The good news was that Michael Palmer and Andrew Garza were in the top 6 and looking strong. The not so good news was that La Mirada's 5th and 6th scorers, Andrew Herrick and Brett Berger, were in 23rd and 24th place and Richard Marquez was 28th. By mile 2, the Matadores were still in 3rd place, their leaders were now in 7th and 9th place, and the team had only gained one point over their rivals. Somebody needed to make a strong move or their hopes would be crushed.

It's rarely obvious before a race just who will step up to the challenge and play the role of the hero. Conditions being what they were, it would have been understandable if the boys had sat back and settled. And, even though it happens in every race that an athlete asks himself the question, "Can I push just a little more?", seldom does his answer result in much difference to the outcome. This race, for whatever reason, one Matadore in particular was NOT going to let down his team. When he saw his teammates in front of him struggle to finish 8, 9, 10, and 11, he knew where they stood. With a frenetic finish that found him moving from the 23rd spot all the way to 17th, Andrew Herrick picked off one runner after another and helped secure 2nd place for his team, 55 - 61. Those six points were the difference between 2nd an 3rd place. For the first time since 1996 -- after years of heartbreaking losses -- La Mirada had finally beat the Norwalk team. Dennis Ly was the first scorer for the Matadores and Mark Gillaspy, who picked off two runners himself at the finish, was 11th overall. As they left the finish area, disappointed at the outcome, the boys knew they had left every ounce on the course. They also know they have a big challenge ahead of them. What they don't yet know, but will soon realize, is that, as a cross country team, they have finally grown up.

Felix takes third at Pepperdine

**On-site coverage by dyestatcal.com**
Dyestatcal Summary and Video of Girl's Sweepstakes Race

Start with "the most beautiful cross country course in the nation," add some of the top teams in the country, mix it up with lots of hills, dirt, and grass -- and then stir in lots of cold rain -- and what do you get? In the words of the Matadores harriers, you get the most memorable, fun invitational they've ever attended! The early morning rain had just about ceased by the time the Lady Mats took the field for the start of the Sweepstakes race, but the effects of the downpour impacted every race that followed. Instead of "races," athletes struggled to simply pull their feet out of the numerous muddy swamps that had formed on the thick, grassy infield. Some actually found it faster to slide down the hills; in fact, one girl in the varsity race slid her way into the lake before getting up, completing the race and earning a medal! Under the circumstances, times were irrelevant. Those with the most training on hills and grass survived -- those who limited their runs to the asphalt struggled the most. Many of the Matadores, invigorated by the challenge, had their best races of the young season over the 3-mile mud slide.

Arriving at Pepperdine at 10:30 am for the 11:20 am sweepstakes race, Melissa Byrd, Lauren McIntyre, Clarissa Negrete, and Ashley Casanover hurried off the bus to begin their warm-up and immediately stepped into a river of fast-moving water rushing down the hill next to the park entrance. Seeing this, Stephanie, Sarah Jeon, and Tatiana Cortes delayed their exit for a moment too long and found themselves still on the bus when it drove off to find parking. How the girls regrouped and found each other remains a mystery, but they were somehow able to prepare for the race, stay relatively dry, and get to the starting line on time. Unfortunately, they were unable to get a feel for the course prior to their race and ran it sight unseen. They also had no clue how difficult their task was as they were racing FIVE nationally ranked teams in addition to Serrano High School, a top-ranked Division I California team.

Stephanie Felix got out fast and made her way to the front of the pack where she was able to dodge most of the falls and fought for the top spot all the way to the finish. A slight slip to the bottom of the last hill allowed two runners from New York to edge her for top honors. Melissa and Lauren raced side-by-side for the second time this season and Ashley, proving that a rookie can run with the best, was only seconds behind. Clarissa Negrete worked her way through the pack and finished as the fifth scorer for the Lady Mats who found themselves in the ninth spot, one point behind Division I El Rancho High School when the scores were tallied. Overall, they were the 4th California team to finish. The JV and Frosh-Soph girls packed it up and worked together over the mud laden course. For many, it was their first race on a true cross country course and one they will remember for a long time! Valerie Wong, who led the JV crew, earned "Athlete of the Meet" honors for the Matadores.

During the long break between the Girl's sweepstakes race and the remainder of the race, there was both good news and bad news: the sun had emerged! Even though temperatures were now in the 70s, humidity and afternoon sunlight was a factor for the later races. In addition, the earlier races had torn up the course by the afternoon. All in all, conditions were less than ideal for the boys varsity team. Racing without Brett Berger or Andrew Herrick, the boys found themselves behind from the start. Dennis Ly, the sole varsity member to earn a medal, accepted the challenge and made a dash for the front pack. Mark Gillaspy found himself slowed down by the muddy terrain and Michael Palmer lost his glasses somewhere after the first mile. For Andrew Garza the race was no more than a hard workout in preparation for the first Suburban League Cluster Meet. It was Richard Marquez who gained the most from the experience as he completed the soggy course just seconds behind Andrew Garza. For his valiant effort, Marquez was named the Matadores "Athlete of the Meet."

Neither the JV or Frosh-Soph boy's teams raced with a full team, but the athletes who did participate earned the title "HARRIERS" on a day the Matadores runners will never forget! Check back later this week and see how the team fares as they take on the Suburban League at the first league cluster meet this Wednesday at Cerritos Regional Park.
