GRAYS LOOK TO DEFEND TITLE

Posted by Chris Pfeil at May 17, 2003 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
5-19-03 The Johnstown Grays will return nine players as they look to defend their 2002 Johnstown AAABA League championship. The Grays went 25-11 last year under manager Chris Pfeil. The Grays defeated Assure Home Equity in the league semifinals and moved on to sweep Galliker’s to earn their first ever trip to the National AAABA Tournament. The Grays opened the national tournament with wins over New York, Altoona, and Livonia before falling to Washington, D.C. and New Orleans. According to Pfeil, “What we accomplished last year was special. No one really thought we could win the league, let alone make it to the semifinals of the national tournament. However, that is over and we know we are entering the season with a target on our backs.” The Grays will begin their title defense on Saturday, May 24, when they take on P&H Architects at the Point Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Scott Goss, 19, and Dave Livengood, 19, will handle the first base and designated hitter duties for the Grays. Goss, in his second year with the Grays, was named First Team All-AAABA League designated hitter last year. Goss hit .317 and led the league with seven home runs. Livengood will begin his first year with the Grays. Livengood played the last two years for Somerset American Legion. Livengood will be called on to drive in runs. Adam Miscik, 19, returns to play second base in his third season with the Grays. Miscik is sound defensively and is a contact hitter. Miscik hit .291 during his rookie season in 2001. Landon Sinclair, 18, will move in to play shortstop for the Grays. Sinclair is a tremendous athlete and will provide an offensive spark. He played last summer for Ebensburg American Legion. Joe Pichler, 20, a native of Rockville, MD, joins the Grays for his first season and will play third base. Pichler was a First Team NJCAA All-American in 2002 at Montgomery College Germantown. He currently attends St. Vincent College, where he was named First Team American Mideast Conference this spring. Pichler will also be used out of the bullpen. Jesse Leonard, 19, joins the Grays for his first season. Leonard will play both infield and outfield. Leonard will be used as the leadoff man. He played last summer for Richland-Windber American Legion. Arek Zambanini, 19, will begin his first year with the Grays. Zambanini will be used as a utility player. Zambanini played last summer for Stoystown American Legion. Nate Crookshank, 18, and Joe Ostinowsky, 19, will handle the catching duties for the Grays. Crookshank hit .323 last year and was named AAABA League Rookie of the Year. Crookshank will also be used in the outfield. Ostinowsky comes to the Grays from Nanty Glo American Legion. Ostinowsky will be used in the outfield and out of the bullpen. Ryan Kabana, 20, returns for his third season with the Grays and will play centerfield. Kabana hit .352 last year and was named a First Team All-AAABA League outfielder. Kabana will see time as a relief pitcher as well. Steve Schrader, 19, will begin his first year with the Grays. Schrader can hit for power and will play left field. Schrader helped lead Meyersdale High School to the 2002 PIAA Western Finals. Ryan Gindlesperger, 19, comes to the Grays from Richland-Windber American Legion. Gindlesperger is a contact hitter and provides speed to the lineup. Mike Cardamone, 20, is back for his third season with the Grays. Cardamone was the 2001 AAABA League Rookie Pitcher of the Year and has a career record of 5-5 with a 3.33 ERA. Cardamone will get the call on opening night. Scott Riddle, 20, returns for his second season in the Grays rotation. Riddle went 4-2 last year with a 3.94 ERA. Josh Geiser, 20, will begin his second year with the Grays. Geiser went 5-1 last year with a 2.95 ERA and was selected First Team All-AAABA League. Jabbar Brown, 20, returns to the Grays rotation this year. Brown pitched for the Grays in 2000 and 2001, compiling a career record of 4-7 with a 3.83 ERA. He has 71 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings. Joe Shrift, 19, returns for his second season with the Grays. Shrift made three appearances last summer after rehabbing from an arm injury. Shrift will add depth in the outfield. Ryan Altimore, 18, will begin his second season with the Grays. Altimore made three relief appearances last year and will be used out of the bullpen again this year. Altimore also will be used in the outfield. Mike Tatarko, 19, joins the Grays from Nanty Glo American Legion. Tatarko, a left-hander, will see time as a starter and out of the bullpen. According to Grays’ manager Chris Pfeil, “The league is more balanced this year. Any of the teams is capable of winning the league and going to the tournament. Also, the addition of the inter-league games with Altoona should make things a little more interesting.” Pfeil added, “Our goal is to make it back to the national tournament and take the next step. We feel we have the talent, but the key will be whether we can stay focused and play consistent all season.” Pfeil will be assisted by Paul Knupp, Ray Stenger, and Chris Zakraysek. Larry Pfeil is the Grays’ General Manager. The Grays are sponsored by Denny Altimore.

2002 SEASON WRAP-UP

Posted by Chris Pfeil at Mar 7, 2003 4:00PM PST ( 0 Comments )
August 15, 2002 After four years in the Johnstown AAABA League, the Johnstown Grays won their first ever league championship and advanced to the National AAABA Tournament. The Grays entered the season picked by few to win the league title. However, the Grays jumped out of the gate quickly and went wire-to-wire in first place to earn their first championship. The Grays opened the season with a three game sweep of Assure Home Equity. Then the Grays took two of three from Galliker's and split a pair with Delweld to start off 6-2. According to Grays' manager Chris Pfeil, "Getting off to a quick start was huge for our confidence. We won a couple of tight games and our players started to really believe in one another." The Grays took two of three from both Delweld and Assure and split two games with Galliker's to move to 11-5. After beating Assure and Delweld, the Grays moved to 13-5 and had a two-game lead over Galliker's for first place. However, Galliker's laid an embarassing 13-1 loss on the Grays to move within one game. Pfeil commented, "I think that game served as a wake-up call for us. Our guys stuck together and used it for motivation the rest of the way." The Grays knocked off Assure twice to move to 15-6, setting up a showdown with Galliker's. Despite trailing Galliker's 5-1 going into the final inning, the Grays managed to rally to tie the game. With two strikes, Steve Siembak laid down a squeeze bunt to force home the go-ahead run. The Grays held on in the bottom of the seventh for the win and knocked off Galliker's the following night, 2-1, to move to 17-6. Pfeil said, "That absoulutely was the turning point of the season. We took a chance on the squeeze and it worked. From then on out, our guys believed that nothing was going to stop them from winning the league." Coming off the emotinal series, the Grays dropped two of three to Delweld to stand at 18-8. The Grays quickly regrouped and realed off seven straight wins to clinch their first ever regular season title. The Grays dropped their final three games of the season to finish the year at 25-11, setting up a semifinal series with Assure Home Equity. Assure stunned the Grays in the opening game, knocking them off 7-3 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 series. Pfeil commented, "They definately caught us off guard. I told our guys that is was a long series and they needed to respond." The Grays did respond, winning three straight by the scores of 16-5, 7-2, and 8-3 to set up a showdown with two-time defending champion Galliker's for the league championship. The Grays took game one of the best-of-5 series with a 9-3 win. The Grays took game two of the series 5-2 to move within one game of a berth in the national tournament. With Galliker's leading 4-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, the Grays tried to mount one last rally. Steve Siembak led off with a single. Jeremy Shaffer pinch ran for him. Chris Minarcin sacrificed Shaffer to second. Chad Kamler's pinch hit single moved Shaffer to third. Jason Wos pinch ran for Kamler. Ryan Unger singled home Shaffer to tie the game and moved Wos to second with one out. Ryan Miscik grounded to short, but Ryan Unger broke up the double play, causing the throw to first to sail wide. Jason Wos hustled home from second to punch the Grays ticket to the 2002 National Tournament. Pfeil said, "It was an unbelieveable feeling for everyone involved in the franchise. Our kids battled and persevered all year and it paid off with a trip to the tournament." However, the Grays weren't satisfied with just making the tournament. Pfeil added, "We really felt confident that we could go a long way." The Grays did just that by winning the tournament opener 2-0 against New York. Kip Watkins threw the complete game shutout in front of a packed house at the Point Stadium. The Grays pounded Altoona 12-2 the next night and then beat Livonia 11-1 to set up a showdown with Washington in a battle of the only two remaining unbeatens in the tournament. The teams battled through six scoreless innings before Washington pulled away with a 7-0 win. The Grays then faced New Orleans with a trip to the National Championship Game on the line. The Grays fell 5-3 in a hard fought game to end their season with a 34-14 record. Pfeil commented, "I think that eveyone in our organization will look back on this season and be real proud of what we accomplished not only by winning the league, but also by making it to the final four in the national tournament." The Grays will now look ahead to defending their league title in 2003. Pfeil said, "We will return 10 players next year that will provide us with a strong nucleus. We definately will have a target on our backs, but look forward to adding another chapter to our success." GRAYS NOTES: Ryan Unger was named the 2002 Johnstown AAABA League Most Valuable Player ... Unger became the first Grays to win the honor ... Kip Watkins was selected as the League Most Valuable Pitcher, also the first Gray to win the honor ... Nate Crookshank became the Grays first AAABA League Rookie of the Year ... In addtion to the awards, the Grays placed threee players on the All AAABA Team: Scott Goss (DH), Ryan Kabana (OF), and Josh Geiser (P).
