1 a perfect number for Hawks
DIV. III STATE CHAMPS
Hawks win first state championship since 2000 with a 4-0 win over #3 Campbell
Senior pitcher Sam Bonifant had to wait 9 days since the last time he pitched and the layoff didn't seem to affect the lefty. Allowing only 4 hits and 1 walk throwing 82 pitches over 7 innings to become the all time leader in wins for the Hawks. To add to the story he also had two hits and two RBI's in the win. The Hawks played well from the start with Jay White tracking a ball to the wall and moments later making a spectacular catch on a diving catch in foul territory. Harry Legier also made a great catch in center field in the 3rd. The rest of the team just played Hawk ball making the plays when the ball came their way. In the 4th inning Hopkinton scored all 4 of the runs with 2 outs. A Sam McManus walk, Jake Nelson single and a Matt McCormack grounder past the pitchers mound that the Campbell second basemen threw by the 1st baseman scored McManus from 3rd. The Next hitter Sam Bonifant lined a 2 rbi double into the left field gap to make it 3-0. Matt Gleason ran for Bonifant and after stealing 2nd went to 3rd on a Jay White Single. Running the old KC play White broke early and when Campbell's pitcher stepped off the rubber to run down White, Gleason broke for the plate and slide hard knocking the ball lose from the catcher and scoring the 4th run. What a run, 20-1 the Hawks took care of business.
