Cougar bats come to life in 6th

Posted by David Chase at Apr 12, 2012 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Campbell lead 2-0 on 1 hit through 5 innings while their Ace, Connor Sahlin was throwing a no-hitter at the Hawks.  With 2 outs in the top of the 6th Nate Greabe walked and with a 3-2 count on Sam McManus, Sahlin   tryed to sneak another fastball by the All-State player and McManus hit an absolute bomb to right center (Campbell Coach Jim Gorham said "it is the longest homerun he has ever seen hit to that part of the Cougar park)  Sahlin lost his composure for a second and hit Matt McCormack but picked him off of 1st base 3 pitches later to kill the rally.  In the bottom of the sixth inning Hopkinton ace Sam Bonifant had his own gem going, allowing only 1 hit and 2 runs, Campbell got their second hit between to flyouts.  Jay White just missed doubling off a Cougar runner at 1st that would have ended the inning but it didn't happen and Campbell went wild at the plate.  The next 6 Campbell hitters collected hits off of Bonifant including a 2 run homer and a 3 run homer, after a walk and another double Bonifant left the game giving up 9 hits and 11 runs.  Give Campbell credit, other than the first homerun that just got over the Campbell wall in left (routine flyball) the rest of their hits were well stroked.  Joe MacDonald came in for Bonifant and after surrendering a walk and a double got a strike out to end the inning.  Hawks went quietly in the 7th.  Hopkinton is now 2-1 and plays Kearsarge Monday.

HAWKS BOW OUT WITH TOUGH LOSS AT SOMERSWORTH

Posted by David Chase at Jun 2, 2011 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The quarter-finals were not kind to the Hawks as they lost for the third time this season to Somersworth 13-1.  Junior Sam McManus had a hard time getting ahead of Somersworth batters allowing 5 runs (4 earned) in the first 2 innings and Junior Jay White gave up 2 solo homeruns in the 3rd and 4th innings.  Trailing 7-1 after 5 Somersworth exploaded for 3 homeruns and 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th to win the game.  Offensively freshman Jake Nelson knocked in the only Hawk run with a sacrifice fly in the second.  Jay White, Sam McManus, Colin O'Keeffe, Steve Auger and Nate Greabe each connected for 1 hit on the afternoon.  The Hawks return 16 players next season so the future looks bright.

Somersworth moves on to play Winnisquam in the State Semi-Finals
