Pitching And Defense Wins Game 1 Vs. Torrey

Posted by ileana Evans at May 11, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The Mavericks defeated the previously unbeaten Torrey Pines squad 7-0 in game one.  The story was pitching and defense... Andrew Hinkle pitched 5 shutout innings, followed by Dillion (Woody) Thomison with 2 scoreless frames.  The defense was outstanding as several quality plays were made in the outfield by Robby Schupp and Marcos Vera.  Jason Guendert and Weston Corica helped out by turning two key double plays up the middle.  Offensively the Mavs were not bad either.  Tanner Gage and Andrew Hinkle led the squad each homering for the Mavs with Zach Armstrong and Kenyon Lyon collecting two hits, followed by Corica and Guendert with knocks.  Great job guys!

LCC JV SUFFER SECOND LOSS 7-1

Posted by ileana Evans at May 10, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Lead 1 to 0 after 5 innings with a strong pitching effort by Trent Swart. He faced the minimum batters thru 4 innings, finishing 5 innings with 0 runs, 1 hit, 4 Ks, 0 BB.  Ryan Lesinski scored the only run in the 5th with a single to center, stole 2nd, and came home on Evan Schreiber's single to right. Unfortunatley, Fallbrook scored 7 unearned runs in the 6th and 7th innings taking advantage of two fielding errors and their bats coming to life. We'll be ready to rebound on Saturday.

Mavs Sweep Warriors with 11-7 Win!

Posted by ileana Evans at May 8, 2009 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The boys played down to their competition for the first 6 innings before finally rallying to defeat Fallbrook in game 2 of the double header.  Several Mavs had 2 hits including Tanner Gage, Andrew Hinkle, Robby Schupp and Jason Guendert.  Kenyon Lyon and Marcos Vera each chipped in with large hits as well.  The pitching was good enough for the victory with Nick McAdoo, Dillon Thomison and Jason Guendert holding off the Fallbrook hitters.  All in all, the Mavericks outscored their opponent 40-9 in the three game sweep!!  Good job fellas!

Max McNabb kept the Warrior offense under control, striking out 10 in 6 innings and allowing only 2 runs on 6 scattered hits. The Mav offense gave him plenty of run support. Garrett Hughes’ 2 run homer in the 2nd started the 9 run, 10 hit attack. Zach Gage followed with a double and then scored on 2 base on balls and 2 hit batters to cap a 4 run inning. 3 straight singles in the 5th by Will Swanner, Grant Jochem, and Matt Lindberg started a 4 run inning, highlighted by back to back rbi singles by Kyle Durrschmidt and Kevin Hill. The Mavs added 1 more run in the 6th when Phil Evans got on base with his 2nd hit by pitch of the day and scored on a Lindberg liner to center. Parker Johnson closed the door on Fallbrook in the 7th with a solid relief outing. Final score, 9-4.

In game 2, Michael Swanner and Jake Raffaele teamed to shut out the Warriors, who stranded 9 baserunners. Swanner allowed 5 hits in his 5 innings, striking out 3, while Raffaele struck out 1 in the last 2 innings. All of the Mav scoring came in the 2nd.  Following walks to Garrett Hughes and Zach Gage and a single by Justin Graeber, Bobby Zalud slammed a double to deep left to score all three runners. That would be all the run support Swanner needed to pick up his 3rd win of the season. The 3-0 victory pushes the Mav season record to 20-5.
