News and Announcements

  The La Costa Canyon Mavericks have clinched at least a tie for the Avocado League Championship but they are looking for more.  A three game sweep of Torrey Pines on top of a preleague tournament win would win the League title outright and all but assure that the Mavericks maintain their number one ranking in San Diego County and the number one seed in the CIF Division One Playoffs.  The top four seeds receive a bye for the Tuesday Play In games and the higher seed has home field advantage for most of the CIF Playoffs.

  As of Monday May 17th the North County Times top ten rankings included:

1) La Costa Canyon; 2) Poway; 3) Montgomery; 4) Torrey Pines; 5) Rancho Bernardo; 6) Ramona; 7) Bonita Vista; 8) Rancho Buena Vista; 9) El Capitan and 10) Grossmont;

The Mavericks beat Poway (Palomar League Champ) and Ramona (Valley League Champ) in preleague tournament games to boost their claim to the number one seed.

JV wins Avocado league with walkoff win

Posted by Mike Corica at May 13, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
The JV squad defeated Torrey Pines 3-2 to take the Avocado league crown.  The game was well played by both teams as the Mavs trailed by a run going into the bottom of the seventh.  The Torrey Hurler had fanned 13 by the time a bunt single by Armstrong and a single by McMahon chased the starter.  This was the best news all day for the Mavs as RBI singles by Hinkle and Gage eventually won it for the home team. Tanner Gage was the starter on the hill allowing only two runs. Jason Guendert got the win with two perfect innings of relief.  The Mavs improve to 21-9 overall and are the champs of the Avocado League..Great job boys!!

MAVERICKS TOP TORREY PINES 4 - 2

Posted by Ruth Stoffel at May 13, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

     The Mavericks took over sole possession of first place in the Avocado League (13-1) with a 4-2 win over Torrey Pines (12-2).  Will Swanner blasted a three run home run in the top of the first inning while his brother Michael Swanner pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 7 hits, 2 walks and striking out 7 to up his pitching record for the season to 7-1.  Trent Swart finished a strong 1.1 innings, striking out 2 and allowing no runs and no hits for his first save of the year (6-0-1).

     Will Swanner's home run was his 9th of the year and included runs batted in number 33, 34, and 35.  Max MacNabb added one rbi, and Bobby Zalud and Phil Evans each had one hit and one run scored.

     The Swanner brothers are the most productive brother pitching- catching battery in the history of La Costa Canyon Baseball.  In 2002 Tyler Ryan was the Avocado League Pitcher of the year, as he had 10 wins, no losses, 2 saves and a CIF playoff win over Poway, and several games were caught by his twin brother, Matt Ryan, the back up catcher; but the combination of pitching and hitting from the Swanner Brothers has set a new standard.

LCC Continues Winning Streak Against Torrey

Posted by Neil Miller at May 13, 2010 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
La Costa faced Torrey Pines today in their final game ever at Diegueno Memorial Stadium.  The Mav's jumped ahead with 3 big runs in the first inning, including a homerun by Anthony Balderas.  The Mavericks then added another run in the 2nd.  By this time the Maverick bats were sizzling.  Balderas added another bomb in the 3rd to put the Mav's up by six runs.  With every hitter focused on getting their last shots out of Diegueno, the Mav's pushed four more runs across the plate in the 4th - including back-to-back homeruns by Davern and Balderas.    The Mavericks cruised to a final score of 11-1.

Kyle Sachrison started on the mound and threw a complete game.  Kyle struck out five hitters and gave up just one earned run.

The team fired on all cyliners with the defense making outstanding plays (including two key doubleplays) when base runners threatened.   The lineup hit well with hits from Casinelli, Solomon, Johnson, Curtis, and Casas.

Note: tons of pictures from the game can be found on Facebook (friend request Bogdan Madurowicz to see them).

With this win, the Mavericks move to 13-0 in the league and 29-2 for the season.  The Mav's now have two games remaining in the season.
