Mavs Score 6 in 7th to Win
The Mavericks waited til the 7th inning on Thursday at San Pasqual for their bats to wake up. With one out in the 7th Anthony Balderas and Colin Winters walked. Evan Shreiber folled with a single to right to load the bases. Shayne Davern step up and drove a ball to the wall in left center to plate two runs. Zach Tieger followed with a single to center scoring two more runs. Tieger and Danny Martin would both score in the inning make the score 6-1. Again the Maverick pitching did a great job led by Jake Schulz, Tanner Gage, and Derek kearney. Schulz pitched 5 innings giving up one earned run, striking out 3, and walking 1. Tanner pitched the 6th without allowing a run to earn his first varsity victory. Derek Kearney closed out the game in the 7th leading the Mavericks to a 3-0 record. The Mavericks play Saturday at Fallbrook 10:30.
Defense and Pitching Lead to Good Start
Behind two great outings by the pitching staff and some sound defensive plays the Mavericks are off to a 2-0 start. Game 1 featured Shreiber(4IP, 0 R 4K) , Kearney, and Schulz(2 IP 0R). In the victory over Scripps Ranch the Mavericks had to come from behind to earn the victory. Trailing 3-0 in the fifth Anthony Balderas drew a 2 out bases loaded walk and Wyatt Oren followed with a ground ball that got threw the third baseman. With runners on 2nd and 3rd Andrew Hinkle singled to right center to score the two go ahead runs. Derek Kearney earned his first varsity victory and Jake Schulz shut down Scripps to earn the save.
Game 2 went to Swart (5 IP, 0R, 10K's) and Hinkle (2IP, 0R, 2K's). Again trailing 2-0 in the fourth the Mavericks started their comeback. Phillip Evans singled to right center and scored on Matt Halls triple to right. In the fifth Colin Winters led of with a double to right and scored on a double by Nick Hanggie. In the sixth Danny Martin led of with a blast to left that put the Mavericks up 3-2. Swart who pitched five great innings was relieved by Hinkle who pitched two solid innings for his first varsity victory. The Mavericks continue play in the Falcon/Pirate Tournament on Thursday at San Pasqual.
