Solid Pitching Timely Hitting Lead Mavs

Posted by Jamie Machado at Mar 23, 2011 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Behind the arms of Evan Shreiber and Derek Kearney the Mavericks were able to defeat visitng Escondido 5-1.  Shreiber was dominant in his six innings allowing no runs on three hits and stiking out 8.  Offensively the Mavericks struggled to put hits together getting two for the day.  Matt Hall started the scoring with another run scoring double in the first to score Zach Tieger who was hit by a pitch.  In the third, Anthony Balderas provided the game winner with a full count three run homer over the left center fence.  The win moves the Mavericks record to 7-0 and 1-0 in the North County Tournament.  The Mavs will play Thursday at Westview if the weather allows.

The Mavericks defeated Torrey Pines on Saturday 10-4 to win their fourth consecutive Falcon Pirate Tournament and ninth overall.  The offense came through during the game led by Chad Jensen, Zach Tieger, and Matt Hall.  Trailing 2-0 and 4-2 Chad Jensen and Zach Tieger led off innings with base hits to start rallies and set the table for the top of the lineup.  Matt Hall had another great game going 3-4 with 5 rbi's.  The game was close until the fifth when the Mavs erupted for 3 and then 5 in the sixth.  On the mound the Mavericks got a great effort out of starter Jake Schulz (4 IP, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K).  He was relieved by Tanner Gage in the fifth facing bases loaded with no outs.  Tanner got a shallow fly ball out, an infield single that plated two and two strikeouts to end the inning.  Gage earned the win to move his record to 2-0.  Trent Swart pitched a scoreless seventh.  The Mavericks move their record to 6-0 on the season and begin play in the North County Tournament on Wednesday against Escondido.

The Mavericks beat SDA 7-0 to advance to the finals of the Falcon-Pirate Tournament.  The finals will be held on Saturday March 19th at Oceanside High School starting at 1:30.  For the third time in four years the Mavericks will face Torrey Pines in the Falcon/Pirate Tournament Championship Game.

Yesterday the Mavericks used the long ball to account for four of the seven runs.  Matt Hall got it started in the second with a shot to left.  Phillip Evans matched Hall with a 2 run shot in the fifth, and Colin Winters hit a towering blast across the street in right.  Nick Hanggie also contributed with a 2-2 performance and solid defense.  On the mound the Mavericks were led by Trent Swart.  Trent pitched six flawless innings striking out 11, walking 1, no runs, and 3 hits.  He was relieved by Drew Krassny who pitched a perfect seventh.  The Mavericks move their record to 5-0 on the year.
