LCC'S SWART IS PERFECT IN ROUT OF OCEANSIDE

Posted by Ruth Stoffel at Apr 12, 2011 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

North County Times - Rob Terranova

  La Costa Canyon High's Trent Swart tossed a perfect game Wednesday afternoon, continuing his dominant senior season by striking out 15 in a 9-0 victory at Oceanside.

  "He just dominated our line-up," Oceanside coach Dave Barrett said. "It was his day."

   Swart (4-0) has allowed just one run in 31 innings this season. Wednesday's outing lowered his ERA to 0.23.

   "I just wanted to go out there today and be effective," said the Duke-bound Swart,"I heard people saying stuff about the perfect game when I was going to the mound in the seventh, but I just went out there and went right at the guys."

   Said Mavericks coach Justin Machado: "He had greeat command of all three pitches today. He was able to get that first strike and he never had a three-ball count. He's always been one of the best pitchers we ever had."

                                               * * * * *

      This was the very first Perfect Game in La Costa Canyon High School's History.   No runs, no hits, no walks and no errors in the field. Twenty one up and twenty one down.

     A no hitter at any level of baseball usually involves at least one great defensive play. Swart made it easy on his team mates by striking out 15 Pirates. His team mates did their part in making six outs in the field without a single error.

     In three games against Oceanside the Pirates scored zero runs and collected only three hits in the three games.

     In Wednesday's game LCC's Phillip Evans hit two home runs and knocked in 4 runs, and  Evan Schrieber added another home run and 2 rbi's.

The Mavericks lost to Vista 5-1 on Thursday snapping their ten game winning streak.  Vista came out of the gates hot swinging the bats scoring three in the first and two in the second.  The Maverick bats just couldn't string together consecutive hits scoring one run on a Weston Corica sac fly in the 6th.  Andrew Hinkle pitched four scoreless innings giving up one hit and striking out five to keep Vista in reach.  The loss moves the Mavericks record to 10-1 on the season.  They play at Bonita Vista on Monday in a non-league contest.

Torrey Pines beat Vista 5-1 on Saturday to win North County Tournament Championship.

Schulz Continues Great Pitching Performances

Posted by Jamie Machado at Mar 28, 2011 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )
Jake Schulz had one his best outings as a Maverick Monday afternoon vs. Westview High School.  Jake threw a complete game shutout, allowing 2 hits, walking one, and striking out 11.  Without his performance the Mavericks would have been in trouble with their offense struggling to produce runs.  The Mavericks had 8 hits on the day but could never capitalize with runners in scoring position.  The only run of the game came when Zach Tieger singled, Matt Hall walked, and Anthony Balderas hit a single to right scoring Tieger.  The win moves the Mavericks record to 9-0 and 3-0 in the North County Tournament.  The Mavericks will play SDA today at 3:30 at SDA.
