Mavericks Beat Carlsbad in Suspenseful Game 2

Posted by Neil Miller at May 9, 2012 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Playing at Carlsbad in the 2nd game of the series, La Costa jumped out in front with a run in the top of the 1st on a single by Martin followed by an RBI hit by Solomon.   Both teams threatened, but neither team could cross the plate until the 6th when Carlsbad got on the board with a run.

Neither team scored in the 7th, and the game went in to extra innings.  The Mavs scored in the 8th when Schupp led off with a single, Casas moved him to 2nd on a sac bunt and Lyon hit him in with a line drive basehit.  The Lancers answered in the bottom of the 8th with a solo homerun.  The Mavericks scored 2 runs in the 9th when Carlsbad helped the cause with an inning-opening fielding error that allowed Hinkle to reach 1st, Winters and Miller both followed with basehit singles.  Schupp then pushed 2 runs across the plate when he put the ball in play with bases loaded to score 2 runs.  The Mavs held Carlsbad in the bottom of the 9th to win 4-2.  The defensive play of the game goes to Robby Schupp for a diving, ESPN-Top-10, catch in deep right center field to end Carlsbad's rally in the 8th inning.

Andrew Hinkle pitched 7 outstanding innings.  Carter Johnson got the win with 2 strong innings of relief.

These teams will face off again on Saturday in the rubber game of the series.  The 2012 Avocado League West Championship will be at stake.

Playing a non-league game against Bonita Vista at home on a perfect Saturday afternoon, the Mavericks started out in the hole.  After one and half innings of play the Mav's were down 3 nothing.  In the bottom of the 2nd the Mavs started to claw their way back in to the game when they scored 1 run to get on the board.   The Mavericks then found their bats in a big 4th inning rally, batting around and scoring 7 runs.  The rally was capped by a 3-run HOMERUN by Colin Winters.   The Mavericks won the game with a final score of 10-5.

Andrew Hinkle started the game and threw six innings.  He was relieved by Carter Johnson in the 7th.

The Mavs now prepare for the final league series of the regular season.  The opponent will be Carlsbad.   La Costa leads the league with an 8-1 record, going in to the final series of the season.  The Mavs lead by one single game with three games left to play.

The Mavericks faced off against nemesis and rival Cathedral Catholic in a game played for bragging rights.  The Mavericks jumped out ahead in the top of the 1st when Danny Martin hit a lead-off BOMB over the left field fence.  Unfortunately the Dons answered with their own lead-off HR, followed by 2 more runs in the bottom of the 1st.  In the 2nd, Cathedral added two more runs to make it 5-1.   With the Cathedral ace on the mound things weren't looking good for the Mav's until the 5th when the Mavs mounted a serious drive.  Miller led off with a solid double, followed by another by Casinelli.  Martin then unleashed his 2nd BOMB of the day - this one to dead center field.  This shot made it 5-4.  Unfortunately the Mavs couldn't find a way to post another run and Cathedral won by one run.

Jake Schulz pitched a solid six innings, but had to take the loss for the day.  Carter Johnson pitched the last inning and retired the side.
