Playing on the road at Bonita Vista, the Mavericks won a pitchers dual 1 - 0. This game took all of 1:40 to play and could not have been played better. The game featured near perfect pitching from both teams and tough defense.
The Mavericks got on the board in the top of the 3rd when Casas reached 1st on a walk. Casinelli ripped a single to left, and then both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Winters then hit Casas in with ball hit to 2nd base.
From here it was all pitching and all defense. Bonita Vista threatened in the bottom of the 4th when BV's #3 hitter singled. The cleanup batter followed suit with another single which looked like it would score the 1st runner. Shayne Davern came up throwing and threw a one-bouncer to the plate to throw the runner out at home for the 3rd out of the inning.
Carter Johnson pitched the complete game shut-out and got the W. He struck out 8, threw 54 strikes (of 80 total pitches), and gave up just 3 hits.
The Mav's now face Poway at home on Thursday at 3:00.
The Mavericks faced Granite Hills today in the Home Opener of the 2013 Season. The game started with LCC scoring two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning when Balderas's single scored Casinelli and Winters. Unfortunately the Mavericks were unable to plate any additional runs against good pitching and a strong Granite Hills defensive outing.
The final score was Granite Hills 7, LCC 2.
LCC travels to Bonita Vista on Tuesday for a road game in Game 3 of the Hilltop Tournament.
