LCC Beats SDA In Extra Innings

Posted by Neil Miller at Mar 22, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

LCC faced cross-town rival San Dieguito Academy with zip code bragging rights at stake.  SDA threw their unbeaten ace (Huggins) and LCC started with their own unbeaten Kyle Sachrison on the mound.  The stands were packed and everyone knew this would be a PITCHING BATTLE.  And it was.

Sachrison did not give up a hit until the 5th inning, but he worked out of it to maintain the score at 0-0.  He gave up another hit in the 6th but Solomon threw the lead-off hitter out when he attempted to steal 2nd base.  In the 7th SDA threatened again when the lead-off batter reached 1st after he was hit by a pitch and the 2nd batter followed with a base hit.  Both runners advanced on a passed ball and things got real serious with runners on 2nd and 3rd with no one out.  Coach Machado made a pitching move and brought in Balderas.  Balderas retired the side with an infield double pay and another ground-out.   After 7 full innings of play the score was 0-0.

La Costa could not mount much offense against SDA's starting ace, but when the relief pitcher entered in the bottom of the 8th, Schenk led off with a single, followed by a perfect sacrifice bunt by Casas.  Balderas hit a walk-off, RBI-single to score Schenk for the winning run.  The final score, after 8 innings of play was LCC 1, SDA 0.

Sachrison started on the mound and threw a fabulous outing - 6 shut-out innings with 3 hits and 6 strike outs.  Balderas got the win, pitching 2 innings and giving up no runs and no hits.

2013 bragging rights for Zip Code 92024 stay with LCC for another year..........

With this win, the Mavericks are now 5-3 on the season.

La Costa played on the road today at Escondido, facing an unbeaten pitcher with a 0.0 ERA.  This didn't matter to the Mav's though as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with a double by Casinelli, a walk by Winters, and singles by Balderas, Davern, and Miller.

The Mav's added another run in the top of the 3rd when Balderas led off with a double and then Davern moved him to 3rd with a single, followed by an RBI-single by Miller.  LCC added two more in the 4th when Casinelli reached first when he was hit by a pitch and Winters singled, followed by an RBI basehit by Balderas and another by Davern.  The Mav's added another 3 in the 5th inning when Casinelli walked and Winters hit a BOMB over the right field fence.  Balderas followed with a single and Davern hit a double to knock in the 3rd run of the inning.  In the 6th inning the Mavs added 2 final runs as Sean McElroy singled and Souter went yard over the CF fence.   The final score was LCC 11, Escondido 0.

The defensive plays of the game were offered up by Solomon as he picked off two more runners - one at first and one at 2nd.

Ethan Abrams started on the mound and threw six complete innings, giving up no runs and just 3 hits.  He struck out 7.  Cameron Kurz spelled relief in the 7th and gave up no runs, striking out 2.

Posted by Neil Miller at Mar 18, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

La Costa played Santa Fe Christian today at LCC.  SFC got off to a quick start scoring 2 runs in the first and then adding 3 more in the top of the second inning.  At this point LCC was down 5 - nothing.  The Mavericks managed a few hits but could not manage to put a runner across the plate.  In the 5th inning the Mavs broke it open, scoring 5 runs on 5 hits.  Casas started the rally with a single, followed by a single by Winters and a double by Balderas, then Davern added another double off the fence, and Miller knocked in a run, followed by a key pinch hit single by Sean McElroy to tie the game.

Neither team could score in the 6th or 7th.  The Mavericks put it away in the bottom of the 8th when Miller led off with a single, followed by McElroy getting on with a hit batsman.  Schenk then bunted the runners ahead and Casas drove a ball over the left fielders head for a walk-off RBI single.  The final score was LCC 6, Santa Fe Christian 5.

Carter Johnson started on the mound for the Mavericks and pitched 2 innings.  EJ Strohler pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings.  He was relieved by Souter who pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings.  Balderas entered in the top of the 8th with men on 1st and 3rd and got the win by striking out the SFC batter.

With this win, the Mav's are now 3 - 3 on the season.  Next up is a road game at Escondido, on Thursday of this week.

Posted by Neil Miller at Mar 14, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

LCC played Hilltop in Chula Vista for the final game of the Hilltop Tournament.  Hilltop started the scoring when they posted a run in the bottom of the first.  La Costa responded in the top of the 3rd with 2 runs after Schenk doubled and Winters and Solomon both hit singles to knock in 2 runs.  LCC added two more runs in the 4th inning when Potter was hit in by a Casas single, and then Casas scored on a ball hit to the shortstop by Casinelli.

LCC still wasn't done though - scoring four more runs in the 5th inning as the entire lineup batted around.  Winters led off with a single and was followed by another single by Solomon.  Davern hit a sacrifice fly to score a run, then Miller hit a single to push in another run.   Potter followed with a single to right field and was followed by Feldmeir's single.  Casinelli added another hit to push in the 4th run of the inning.

Winters led off the 6th inning with an exciting inside-the-park homerun when the centerfielder dove for the ball and could not come up with the catch.  From there it was  Mavericks defense to close it out.  The final score was LCC 9, Hilltop 1.

The big man Kyle Sachrison was on the mound tonight and threw 5 innings.  He struck out 3 and gave up 4 hits to get the win.  Strehlow and Rodriguez each pitched one inning of shut-out relief.

11 Inning Heart Breaker - LCC vs. Poway

Posted by Neil Miller at Mar 13, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

La Costa faced Poway today in a home game on a perfect baseball afternoon.  Poway jumped ahead in the top of the first, scoring one run - but leaving the bases loaded.  The Mav's got on the board in the bottom of the first when Casinelli and Winters singled and Casinelli scored to tie the game.

Casinelli and Winters singled again in the 3rd and Moniak and Davern both hit sac flies to push the Mav's ahead 3 to 2.  LCC added another run in the bottom of the 4th when Casas doubled to left field and scored on another Casinelli base knock.  Poway was not not finished yet - adding runs in the 5th and then the 7th to tie the ballgame.  LCC was not able to score in the 7th so the game went in to extra innings.

Neither team could sustain a rally in the 8th, 9th, or 10th innings, but Poway managed to score a run in the top of the 11th and La Costa failed to answer in the bottom.  The game ended after 11 innings with a final score of Poway 5, LCC 4.

Abrams started on the mound for the Mavericks and threw  6 and 2/3 innings giving up just 2 earned runs.  He struck out 6 hitters and gave up just 3 hits.  Souter pitched 4 and 1/3 tough innings and unfortunately got the L.  He gave up no earned runs and allowed 4 hits.

The Mavericks are back on the road tomorrow for the 4th game of this week.  The trip will be to Hilltop HS in Chula Vista for a 3:00 game.
