Posted by Neil Miller at May 6, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

LCC played Carlsbad today in the first game of the final league series of the season.  Carlsbad managed to squeeze a runner across the plate in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 1-0 lead.  LCC then tied the game in the top of the 4th when McElroy and Miller reached base on mishandled balls in the infield, and Schenk executed a perfect sacrifice bunt, followed by Casas hitting an RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game.

Carlsbad strung together 4 hits in the 5th inning to score 3 runs to take a 4-1 lead that was good enough to win the game.

Ethan Adams started on the mound for the Mavericks and took the loss.

With the loss, the Mavericks are now in a corner with three must-win games in the next 7 days.  Next up is Carlsbad at home tomorrow for Senior Night.  Festivities are planned!

LCC Beats Vista In Close Game

Posted by Neil Miller at May 3, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

LCC faced Vista in a critical game 2 of their league series.  Both teams had their aces on the mound, the weather was summer-time perfect for baseball, and the stands were packed - everyone knew this would be a battle, and it was.

Thru 3 innings of play it was a total pitcher's duel, the score was locked at 0 all.  In the bottom of the 4th, Casinelli moved to 1st as he was hit by a pitch, big man Winters laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Casinelli to 2nd, then Davern crushed an RBI double to RCF.  This moved LCC ahead 1-0.  From there it was perfect pitching by Carter Johnson and near perfect defense by the Mavs and the game ended with a final score of LCC 1, Vista 0.

Johnson started on the mound and pitched all 7 innings.  Johnson looked major leaguesque in this game and dominated the Vista lineup with a combination of fastballs and huge bending curve balls.

The Mavericks now move in to the regular season finale series against rival Carlsbad.  The two teams are battling for league title.  The team that wins this 3-game series will win the 2013 Avocado West League banner.

LCC Takes Vista in Game 1

Posted by Neil Miller at Apr 30, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

LCC played Vista on the road today in game 1 of a 3-game league series.  The game started out rough with Vista scoring 2 runs in the first and most of the LCC batters struggling against starter & ace Bobby Roth of Vista.  Things started to unravel for the Panthers in the 5th when Tyler McElroy reached 1st after getting hit by a pitch, then Casinelli reached first on a walk, and Balderas followed with a 3-run HR BOMB off Roth to score three huge runs and make the score LCC 3, Vista 2.

The Mavs added another run in the 6th when Miller walked and Schenk hit, then Sean McElroy followed with another walk.  Casinelli hit a ball to left that was misplayed and then Winters hit a L O N G sacrifice fly to score the 2nd run of the inning.  Vista replied in the bottom of the 6th with a run.  LCC managed to plate one more run in the 7th when Solomon led off with a single and Sean McElroy followed with another single.  Casinelli eventually scored on a wild pitch.  The Mavericks held strong in the bottom of the 7th to win the game with a final score of 6-3.

Sachrison started on the mound and got the WIN for the Mavs, giving up just one earned run.  Balderas spelled relief in the 7th and shut down the side.

The Mavericks are now 9-1 in league play.  Next up is Vista at home on Friday.

LCC Takes Doubleheader Against El Camino

Posted by Neil Miller at Apr 26, 2013 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

La Costa faced El Camino this afternoon in a road game doubleheader, and LCC came with revenge in mind after losing to EC earlier in the week.

GAME 1: This game started out as a defensive & pitching battle with the score tied 0-0 going in to the 5th inning.  LCC finally busted things open when Casinelli opened with a single, and Solomon followed with a walk, followed by an HR BOMB by Davern.  Two minutes later Balderas decided to make it back-to-back with another jack to make the score 4-0 La Costa.  El Camino managed to score runs in the 5th and 6th but the score ended LCC 4, El Camino 2.

Ethan Allen started and he pitched 6 fine innings to get the win.

GAME 2: LCC scored in the top of the 2nd when Solomon led off with a double and was hit in by Casas.  The Mav's then added two more in the 3rd inning when Winters walked and advanced on a wild pitch and was then hit in when Balderas singled.  Miller then singled to drive in Balderas to make the score 3-0.  The Mav's then added another insurance run in the 5th when Davern hit his 2ND HOMERUN OF THE DAY - this one a smash over dead centerfield.  LCC managed to hold on to the lead as El Camino scored 2 in the 5th to bring the score to 4-2.  Things got interesting in the bottom of the 7th when the 2nd batter went yard to bring El Camino within 1.  At this point starting pitcher Carter Johnson had thrown 97 pitches...........bringing Coach Justin to the mound.  Machado extended the leash and Johnson stayed in and retired the side to get the COMPLETE GAME and the win.

With this pair of wins, LCC is now 8-1 in league play.  Next up is a game against Vista on Wednesday - on the road.
